FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MOUNTIES SOFTBALL SWEEPS WEST CHESTER – TAGLIAFERRI HITS HOME RUN IN EIGHT TO WIN OPENER – DEAN THROWS SHUTOUT IN NIGHTCAP

WEST CHESTER – Alison Tagliaferri (Linden/Jersey Shore) blasted a solo home run in extra innings in the opener and Kristen Dean (Roaring Branch/Canton) threw a shutout in the nightcap to lead Mansfield to a 3-2, 6-0 sweep over West Chester in a PSAC East doubleheader Saturday afternoon.

Mansfield trailed 2-1 going into the top of the seventh with Kristy Loomis (Carbondale/Bishop O’Hara) led off with a single and later moved to second. With two outs, Tricia Bailey (Canton/Canton) doubled off the right field fence to drive in Loomis and tie the score.

In the top of the eight Tagliaferri crushed a solo home run over the left field fence for a 3-2 lead.

Tagliaferri also started the game on the mound giving up just two hits in five innings before being relieved by Amy Martino (Binghamton/Chenango Valley). Martino allowed no hits and struck out two over the final three innings to earn the win.

In the nightcap, Dean scatted five hits and struck out six with no walks in improving to 6-3 on the season. Tagliaferri hit a two-run home run in the third inning for all the runs the Mountaineers would need. Jackie Laskowski (Olyphant/Mid Valley) hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning and also added a double and three RBI’s. Nancy Quinn (Merritt Island,FL/Merritt Island) had two doubles and an RBI.

Mansfield improves to 15-5 overall and 2-2 in the PSAC East. The Mountaineers will host Kutztown on Wednesday.
