FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MOUNTIES SWEEP ESU – MARTINO STRIKES OUT 12 IN OPENER – TAGLIAFERRI THROWS FIVE-HIT SHUTOUT IN NIGHTCAP

MANSFIELD – Amy Martino (Binghamton,NY/Chenango Valley) struck out 12 hitters in the opener and Alison Tagliaferri (Linden/Jersey Shore) fired a five-hit shutout in the nightcap to lead Mansfield University to a 3-2, 4-0 sweep over East Stroudsburg at Helen Lutes Field Saturday afternoon.

In the opener the Mountaineers got on the board first on a run scoring single by Kris Kelly (Niveveh,NY/Afton) in the first inning.. That run stood until East Stroudsburg scored twice in the top of the fourth inning.

Mansfield would then tie the game in the bottom of the sixth when Nancy Quinn (Merritt Island, FL/Merritt Island) led off with a double and later scored on sacrifice fly by Heather Long (Pottstown/Pottsgrove).

East Stroudsburg challenged in the top of the seventh with runners on first and second, but Martino recorded her 12^th strikeout of the game to end the threat.

Sytiva Seitz (Dallastown/Dallastown) led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and later scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Nancy Quinn.

In the nightcap, the Mountaineers scored twice in the first inning when Seitz led off with a double and scored on a single by Tagliaferri. Kris Kelly then doubled in Tagliaferri. Mansfield would add another run in the third on an RBI double by Tagliaferri. Heather Long hit a solo home run in the fourth to round out the scoring..

Tagliaferri struck out five while walking two and pitched her way out of trouble with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth.

Mansfield improves to 24-14 overall and 11-11 in the PSAC East. The Mountaineers will play their final reason games of the season on Sunday when they travel to Bloomsburg.
