FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MOUNTIES PITCHING SHUTS DOWN VIRGINIA STATE- DEAN AND TAGLIAFERRI EACH TOSS ONE-HITTER

PETERSBURG, VA- Kristen Dean (Roaring Branch/Canton) pitched a one-hitter in the opener as Alison Tagliaferri (Linden/Jersey Shore) followed with a complete game one-hitter of her own in game two to help lead Mansfield University to a 10-0 and 9-0 sweep of Virginia State University Saturday afternoon at Petersburg, VA.

Dean went six strong innings in game one striking out seven batters while only giving up one hit to improve to 5-2 on the season.  The Mountaineers had 13 hits as Heather Long (Pottstown/Pottsgrove) went 2-3 with a double and a triple.  Alexis Drebitko (Syracuse,NY, West Genesee) had three RBI’s.

In game two Mansfield’s pitching came up big again as Tagliaferri tossed a one-hit complete game shutout while striking out nine batters to improve to 3-0 on the season. Tagliaferri also broke the game open with her bat.  She belted a three-run homerun in the third inning as the Mountaineers scored four runs to take a 5-0 lead after three innings.

Mansfield added four more runs in the fifth as Sytiva Seitz (Dallastown/Dallastown) went 2-3 with two RBI’s and Nancy Quinn (Merritt Island, FL / Merritt Island) went 2-2 at the plate for Mansfield.

Mansfield improves to 11-3 on the season and will play Virginia Union tomorrow.
