FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MOUNTIE SOFTBALL CAPTURES ECAC CHAMPIONSHIP IN 10-2 WIN OVER GEORGIAN COURT – SYTIVA SEITZ NAMED TOURNAMENT MVP

GARDEN CITY, NY – Forced into a seventh game, the Mansfield University softball team answered the challenge with Sytiva Seitz (Dallastown/Dallastown) blasting two home runs in a 10-2 victory of Georgian Court to capture the ECAC Division II Softball Championship at Garden City, NY Sunday afternoon.

“It was a great way to end a very good season,” said head coach Edith Gallagher on capturing her second ECAC crown. “We had our opportunities to win it in the first game, but just couldn’t come up with the timely hit. Then Sytiva (Seitz) took the bull-by-the horns in the title game.”

Mansfield won both its games on Saturday and faced Georgian Court, which defeated host Adelphi 2-0 to earn a berth in the Championship round.

In a rematch of last year’s ECAC title game, Georgian Court pulled out a 1-0 upset in eight innings to force a game seven.

Alison Tagliaferri (Linden/Jersey Shore) pitched a great game in the opener, scattering two hits over nine innings and striking out six with no walks. Mansfield stranded two runners in the third and sixth innings before Georgian Court scored in the eighth on sacrifice fly. Mansfield had a runner at third in the bottom of the inning with one out, but could not get the runner in.

“It was a little frustrating to lose that way,” said Gallagher. “I know our players thought we should have beaten them last year in the title game and they were not about to let that happen again.”

After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning on an unearned run, the Mountaineers exploded for five runs in the top of the second. With one out, Kris Kelly (Nineveh,NY/Afton) singled and advanced to second on a single by Jackie Laskowski (Olyphant/Mid Valley). Heather Long (Pottstown/Pottsgrove) then doubled in before Kelly and Laskowski scored when Kristen Dean (Canton/Canton) reached on an error.  Sytiva Seitz then drilled a two-run home run over the centerfield fence to give the Mountaineers all the runs they would need to capture the title.

Mansfield added two more runs in the fourth on Seitz’s second two-run home run of the day and two more in the fifth before ending the game on the mercy rule with a single run in the sixth.

Amy Martino (Binghamton,NY/Chenango Valley) went the distance on the mound giving up just two hits while striking out eight to earn her eighth win of the season.

Seitz was named the Tournament MVP going 6-for-8 in Sunday’s games with two home runs and five RBI’s. Kris Kelly had three hits in the title game as did Jackie Laskowski who also had a double.

ECAC Championship Notes -- It marked the third ECAC Championship for the Mountaineers who have appeared in eight ECAC Title Games … It was the second ECAC Title for Gallagher who last won the Championship in 1992, her first as head coach and the last time Mansfield won the championship.
