FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: TERI TRESSLER'S TWO GOALS PROPEL MOUNTAINEERS OVER MILLERSVILLE

  MANSFIELD – Teri Tressler(Newport/Newport) scored both goals on Saturday to lead Mansfield University to victory over Millersville University in Mansfield's first league game of the season.

  Tressler's first goal came in the first half with 28:09 remaining and was an unassisted goal. The Mountaineers extended their lead on the second of Tressler's goals early in the second half. Teri took a nice pass from Kristi Swartz (Fairfield/Fairfield) and deposited it over the shoulder of Millersville's goalie Jen Edelman for what would prove to be the game winner.

Millersville's goal came late in the game when Holly Mack took a pass from Karisten Emery and put it past the diving Heather Long (Pottstown/Pottsgrove).

For the game Long made eight saves for the Mountaineers. Millersville's Edelman made 13 saves in the defeat.

The Mountaineers improve to 4-1 on the season and 1-0 in PSAC play while Millersville falls to 0-6 and 0-2 in the PSAC.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MOUNTIE FIELD HOCKEY IMPROVES TO 3-1 WITH 2-1 WIN OVER MARYWOOD

  MANSFIELD – Gretchen Reschke (Owego,NY/Owego Free) and Teri Tressler (Newport/Newport) each scored a goal to lead Mansfield University to a 2-1 win over Marywood University Thursday afternoon at Spaulding Field.

Reschke scored a solo goal midway through the first half while Tressler netted her game winner off in the second half.

  Heather Long (Pottstown/Pottsgrove) had three saves in goal.

  The Mountaineers improve to 3-1 on the season while Marywood falls to 0-4.

Mansfield will host Millersville on Saturday and Mercyhurst on Sunday.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MANSFIELD UNIVERSITY ATHLETIC EVENTS TO CONTINUE AS SCHEDULED – MOMENT OF SILENCE TO PRECEDE EVERY ATHLETIC EVENT FOR ONE WEEK

MANSFIELD – Mansfield University’s athletic events for the remainder of this week will be played as scheduled. The announcement was made today by Joe Maresco vice-president of Student Affairs.

“In accordance with the wishes of President Bush that a return to normalcy is the best response to terrorism, Mansfield University has decided to adhere to the original schedule of athletic events this week,”Maresco said. 

“We are all very sensitive to the great loss experienced by this country, including by some of our Mansfield family, and will honor their memories with a moment of silence before the start of all home events.”

The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) has issued a statement that includes: 

Institutions may continue their scheduled contests except in the case

of special circumstances.  If a president feels his/her institution is

not capable of meeting its schedule, he/she should contact the

conference office.  This will be evaluated on a day-to-day basis.

The PSAC cancelled all athletic contests on Tuesday, however Mansfield did not have an athletic event scheduled.

The Mansfield University field hockey team has games schedule for Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

The football team will host Ithaca College on Saturday and the cross-country team is scheduled to travel to Penn State on Saturday.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MOUNTIES IMPROVE TO 2-1 ON SEASON WITH 1-0 WIN OVER FRANKLIN PIERCE -- GRETCHEN RESCHKE SCORES GAME WINNER WITH 9:29 TO PLAY

 

RINDGE, NH -- Gretchen Reschke (Owego,NY/Owego Free) broke up a 0-0 tie on a goal with 9:29 remaining to lead Mansfield University to a 1-0 win over Franklin Pierce College in NCAA Division II field hockey action Monday afternoon.

  Reschke took a pass from Terri Tressler (Newport/Newport) to score the only goal of the day. The Mountaineers controlled the tempo of the game firing off 20 shots inside the circle to just five for Franklin Pierce. Mansfield also had 17 penalty corners to Franklin Pierce's two.

  Heather Long (Pottstown/Pottsgrove) posted her first shutout of the season stopping two shots.

  The Mountaineers improve to 2-1 on the season. Franklin Pierce falls to 0-1.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MOUNTIES DOWN MERRIMACK 3-1 FOR FIRST FIELD HOCKEY WIN OF THE SEASON -- KRISTI SWARTZ TALLIES TWO GOALS

 

NORTH ANDOVER,MA -- Kristi Swartz (Fairfield/Fairfield) scored two goals and Gretchen Reschke (Owego,NY/Owego Free) added another to lead Mansfield University to a 3-1 over Merrimack College in NCAA Division II field hockey Sunday afternoon.

  Swartz scored the Mountaineers first goal of the season at the 24:59 mark of the first half off an assist by senior Crystal Kimble (Stroudsburg/Stroudsburg) and added another unassisted goal  at the 22:06 mark of the second half to put the Mountaineers up for good.

  Reschke scored the final goal of the afternoon taking an assist from Kimble with 5:14 to play.

  The Mountaineers improve to 1-1 on the season and travel to Franklin Pierce College on Monday. Merrimack falls to 0-1.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MOUNTIES DROP SEASON OPENER IN 2-0 SETBACK AT UMASS-LOWELL

LOWELL, MA -- The Mansfield University field hockey team suffered a 2-0 setback to the UMass-Lowell in the 2001 opener Saturday afternoon.

The Mountaineers had eight shots inside the circle, but could not find the back of the net. UMass-Lowell had just three more shots, but a first period goal by Martha Marsden and second half goal by Nicole LeBlanc proved to be the difference in the game.

Heather Long (Pottsgrove/Pottstown) had eight saves in goal for the Mountaineers.

Mansfield will travel to Merrimack College on Sunday and Franklin Pierce College on Monday.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MOUNTIES PLACE THREE ON NFHCA NATIONAL ACADEMIC SQUAD -- SENIOR MICHELLE ROHRER, JUNIOR LISA BRAY AND FRESHMAN HEATHER LONG HONORED

MANSFIELD -- Mansfield University standout field hockey players Michelle Rohrer (Quakertown/Quakertown), Lisa Bray (Bernville/Tulphocken) and Heather Long (Pottstown/Pottsgrove) have been named to the 2000 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II National Academic Squad.

To be nominated for NFHCA honors, a player must have achieved a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.30 and be a starter or key reserve.

Rohrer is a four year starter for the Mountaineers and a defense standout. The senior captain started all seventeen games for Mansfield this season where she scored two goals with six assists and two defensive saves. The daughter of Love and John Rohrer of Quakertown, Michele is majoring in elementary education at Mansfield.

Bray earned second team All-PSAC honors for the second straight season in 2000. A starter in all 17 games this season; the junior back was credited with four assists and a defensive save. The daughter of Marcia and John Bray of Richland, Lisa is a computer science major at Mansfield.

Just a sophomore, Long started 16 of 17 games in goal for the Mountaineers where she registered 172 saves and three shutouts. The daughter of Jayne and Steven Long of Pottstown, Heather is majoring in criminal justice at Mansfield.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: DAN HOLLAND AND GRETCHEN RESCHKE NAMED MANSFIELD UNIVERSITY MALE AND FEMALE FALL ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

MANSFIELD -- Dan Holland (Scranton/Bishop O'Hara) and Gretchen Reschke (Owego,NY/Owego Free) have been named the Mansfield University Male and Female Athlete of the Year for their outstanding performance on the football gridiron and field hockey pitch this year.

Holland had the most productive freshman season for a defensive player in Mountaineer history. He became the first player in school history to be twice named the PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week while ranking third in the conference in tackles (122) including first in solo tackles (81), second in tackles for a loss (17), fourth in sacks (7) and seventh in pass breakups (7).

In addition he was named the PSAC East and ECAC South Rookie of the Year and became the first freshman in school history to earn 1st team All-PSAC East honors.

The son of Joe and Donna Holland, Dan is majoring in special education at Mansfield.

Reschke is the first athlete in school history to earn Athlete of the Year honors in her first two seasons of competition.

The team's top point producer this season, Reschke finished fourth in the PSAC in points per game (1.82), was first in the conference in assists (.53 pg) which ranked fourth in NCAA Division II.

Named to 1st team All-PSAC honors for the second straight season, Reschke ranked seventh in the conference in goals per game. She is also the first field hockey player in school history to be named to the NFHCA All-American team in both her freshman and sophomore seasons.

In just two short years, Reschke is already MU's career all-time points leader with 78, including a school record 29 goals.

The daughter of Stella and Donald Reschke, Gretchen is majoring in biology at Mansfield.
