FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mounties Take Defending National Champions to Overtime before Falling 4-3 – Ryanne Higgins Has Goal and Two Assists

SPRINGFIELD, RI – Ryanne Higgins (Newtown/Council Rocks) scored a goal with just under seven minutes remaining to send the game into overtime, but Mansfield came up just short of recording what would have been one of the biggest wins in school history in a 4-3 loss to defending NCAA Division II Champion UMASS-Lowell in a game played at Bryant College in Springfield, RI Monday afternoon.

“We finished the trip 1-2, but we did a lot of good things out there,” said head coach Diane Monkiewicz. “I’m sure today’s score is going to get everyone’s attention. To play three games on the road in three days including games against two teams in last season’s NCAA championship and do as well as we did shows a lot about the character and depth of this team.”

Jaci Moulton scored off a corner just a little over 11 minutes into the game to give UMASS-Lowell an early lead.

The Mountaineers tied the score a little over four minutes later when Keely Jarrett (Pennsburg/Upper Perkiomen) scored her third goal of the young season from direct on off a pass from Higgins.

The defending champions added two goals when Jill Tierney scored off a rebound and Moulton picking her second goal off her won rebound on a breakaway.

Mansfield pulled to 3-2 when freshman Breanne Tobin (Perkasie/Pennridge) took a rebound off Higgins and tucked the ball inside the post with less than three minutes remaining in the first half.

After the teams’ combined for five first half goals, defense came to the forefront  in the second half with the squads locked in a scoreless battle until Higgins tied the score, dribbling past the goalie in the 63rd minute.

UMASS-Lowell gained possession first in overtime and quickly put two shots on goal with Sara Hohenberger scoring the game winner off on a backhand tip-in.

UMASS-Lowell held a slight 19-18 shots advantage. Brianna DeLuca (West Grove/Avon Grove) was credited with eight saves in goal for the Mountaineers.

It doesn’t any easier for the Mountaineers this week when they travel to NCAA national runner-up Bloomsburg on Saturday.
