FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mounties Score First but Stonehill Rallies for 3-1 in 2006 Field Hockey Season Opener

Easton, MA – Junior Shana Markwis (Milford) scored just three minutes into the game, but Stonehill rallied for three second-half goals to beat Mansfield 3-1 in the season opener for both schools at W.B. Mason Stadium Saturday.

Markwis scored the season’s first goal on a penalty corner just 2:57 into the game while the Mountaineer defense and goalie Brianna DeLuca (West Grove) kept Stonehill off the board for the first half.

But the second half proved to all Stonehill with the Skyhawks scoring two goals in less than a minute early and the second half. Kerri Sullivan scored the first off an assist by Kelly Latendresse who then scored 55 seconds later off a pass from Patty McNeil.

Kara Brady put the game out of reach with a goal off a corner with 17 minutes remaining.

Mansfield, which tallied four shots  in the first half, could not generate an attempt in the second half.

DeLuca recorded 10 saves. Freshman Breanne Tobin (Perkasie) managed two shots on goal in her first collegiate contest.

Stonehill advanced to the NCAA field hockey national championship quarterfinals last season.

Mansfield (0-1) travels to Rhode Island to take on Bryant College on Sunday at noon before taking on NCAA Division II defending national champion UMASS-Lowell on Monday.
