FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mounties upset #5 Kutztown 1-0 in overtime – Freshman Breanne Tobin scores game winner on assists by Shana Markwis – Brianna DeLuca post first career shutout

KUTZTOWN – Freshman Breanne Tobin scored the game winning goal seven minutes into overtime and sophomore goalie Brianna DeLuca recorded her second collegiate shutout as Mansfield upset #5 ranked Kutztown 1-0 in a PSAC field hockey contest at University Field Saturday afternoon.

DeLuca was brilliant in goal turning away all 11 shots on goal including two in overtime. The #10 ranked Mountaineers finally broken the scoreless time with Tobin scored off an assist by junior Shana Markwis with less than four minutes remaining in overtime.

Markwis brought the ball up the pitch and put pressure on the goal and passed to her Tobin on her right who tipped in the winning goal.

It was the fifth goal of the season for the freshman Tobin and first assist for Markwis.

Sam Flowers recorded 12 saves in goal for Kutztown (5-2, 1-1).

The win was the first over Kutztown since a 3-0 victory in 2001 and first shutout for Mansfield since posting a 7-0 victory over Slippery Rock in the 15^th game of the 2002 season.

More importantly, it was a key win over a PSAC opponent on the road.

The victory concludes a brutal season opening six-game road trip for Mansfield that included contest against all four NCAA Division II programs from last year and back-to-back games against #1 ranked Bloomsburg and #2 Shippensburg.

Five of Mansfield first six games this season have been against ranked opponents.

The Mountaineers (2-4, 1-2 PSAC) will finally open the home portion of the 2006 when they host #7 ranked IUP tomorrow (Sunday) at Spaulding Field starting at 1 p.m.
