Mounties Drop 3-2 Heartbreaker to IUP in OT – Ryanne Higgins Scores both MU
Goals
 MANSFIELD
– Liz Martini scored from the top of the circle off a penalty
after time had expired in overtime to give #7 ranked IUP a 3-2 come-from-behind
win over #10 ranked Mansfield in a PSAC field hockey game Sunday afternoon at
Spaulding goal.
“It was a tough loss,” said
head coach Diane Monkiewicz. “Especially since we thought we had
won the game on a goal earlier in overtime.”
That controversial play
occurred seven minutes into overtime when it looked as if Ryanne Higgins
scored the winning goal off a breakaway down the right side. However, the goal
was waved off and Mansfield awarded a corner but the Mountaineers failed to
convert.
As time ran down in
overtime, IUP was awarded a penalty corner and with time expired; Martini sent a
bullet deep into the net to win the game.
Higgins had an outstanding
game for the Mountaineers’ scoring the game’s first goal off an assist by
Keely Jarrett just over four minutes into the game.
That lead held up through
the first half before IUP come out strong after intermission, pressing the
Mountaineer defense and peppering MU tender Brianna DeLuca
resulting in goals by Brittany Owens and Marlous Bijleveld.
Higgins would tie the score
with just under seven minutes remaining in the game when Higgins beat IUP goalie
Lydia Dolly on a
penalty shot.
IUP out shot Mansfield 22-10
including 15-6 after the first half. DeLuca recorded eight saves in goal for
Mansfield while IUP’s Dolly was credited with five saves. IUP also had a 24-8
advantage on corners.
Mansfield falls to 2-5
overall and 1-3 in the PSAC. IUP improves to 3-3 and 2-2 in the conference. The
Mountaineers will host Millersville at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at Spaulding Field.
