Keely Jarrett Scores Twice to Lead Mansfield to 4-0 Win at Bryant – Brianna
DeLuca Records Nine Saves in Posting Shutout – Freshman Carlyn Spangler has a
Goal and Two Assists
 SMITHFIELD,
RI – Junior Keely Jarrett (Pennsburg/Upper Perkiomen) scored two
goals and Brianna DeLuca (West Grove/Avon Grove) stopped nine
shots including two penalty shots to lead Mansfield to a 4-0 win over Bryant on
a rainy pitch in Smithfield, RI Sunday afternoon.
“That was a good win for
us,” said head coach Diane Monkiewicz after her Mountaineers
posted their first win over Bryant since 2001. “Going into the season we thought
we were going to be improved offensively and today we showed that we are. We
also played well defensively and Brianna DeLuca had a great game in goal.”
After a scoreless first
half, freshman Carlyn Spangler (Valley Center,CA/Valley Center)
scored her first collegiate goal dribbling past Bryant goaltender Kyndayi Mawema
less than two minutes into the second half.
Jarrett scored her 20th
career goal a little over five minutes later taking a rebound from Spangler and
putting it into the left side of the net.
Freshman forward
Breanne Tobin (Perkasie/Pennridge) netted her first collegiate goal at
the 57:19 mark from six feet out off a deflection by Jarrett. A little over a
minute later, Jarrett scored her second goal of the game off another assist by
Spangler.
As well as the offense
played, it was Brianna DeLuca’s strong play in goal that literally saved the
shutout. The
sophomore recorded her first career shutout by stopping two penalty shots in the
second half while recording nine saves on the day.
It marked the first
shutout for the Mountaineers since beating Slippery Rock 7-0 in 2002, a span of
58 games.
The Mountaineers held a
16-15 advantage on shots while Bryant goalkeeper Kundayi Mawema had 10 stops.
Mansfield will take on
UMASS-Lowell, the defending NCAA Division II National Champions, Monday at noon
at Bryant College.
