FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: With the fall semester in full swing at Mansfield University 12 Mounties returned from several collegiate summer leagues
Here's a look at how our returning Mountaineers did.
Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League
The Mountaineers had five players on the ACBL Champions Kutztown Rockies. Centerfielder Chris Miller (Kenvil, NJ) started in 29 games hitting .292 with 28 hits, 5 doubles and 12 RBI's. Matthew Young (James Creek, PA) played 3B and started 36 games for the Rockies. Young hit .248 with 30 hits scoring 25 runs, 3 doubles, 20 walks, and stole 12 bases in 14 attempts. Young struck out only 5 times in 121 AB. Catcher Tony Battisti (Horseheads, NY) caught 30 games and .157 driving in 11 runs while throwing out 39 percent of would be base stealers. Justin Garcia (Blandon, PA) made 5 appearances and 2 starts with a 4.70 ERA in 15.1 innings and had a 1-2 record. Kevin Miller (Kenvil, NJ) a transfer from Shippensburg University hit .216 with 22 hits, 7 runs scored, 7 RBI's, 2 doubles and 5 stolen bases in 6 attempts.
Coastal Plain League
Cody Stinger (Chambersburg, PA) Played for the Florence Red Wolves, winners of the South Division first half and semi-finalist in the Pettit Cup Tournament. Stinger hit .277 in 36 games for the Red Wolves. Cody had 33 hits scoring 13 runs, with 7 doubles, 1 triple, and 4 home runs while driving in 27. Mansfield University had three players on the Outer Banks Dare Devils. Tyler Noel (Irvona, PA) was 4-2 with a 2.45 ERA in 9 starts. In 58.2 innings Noel gave up just 49 hits and struck out 37 while walking only 10. Teams hit just .222 verses Noel this past summer. Left handed ace Eric Rosenberger (Dillsburg, PA) had a 1.58 ERA in 23 appearances. In 40 innings Rosenberger was 2-0 with 1 save while giving up 44 hits striking out 19 and walking only 5. Irv Sleighter (Chambersburg, PA) made 4 appearances and had 3 starts for the Dare Devils. Sleighter finished the summer 2-0 with a 1.84 ERA in 14.2 innings. Batters hit only .224 against the right-hander.
New York Collegiate League
Chris Zelko ( Horseheads, NY) pitched for the defending NYCBL champion Elmira Pioneers. Zelko compiled a 2.81 ERA in 32 innings giving up 25 hits with 17 walks while striking out 27. Zelko gave up just 10 runs while working out of the bullpen and as a starter for the Pioneers. Ryan Riley (Windsor,NY) also played for the defending champs the Elmira Pioneers and hit .255 in 31 games. Ryan had 25 hits with 13 RBI's, 2 doubles and 1 triple. Ryan was 5 for 5 in stolen bases.
Cal Ripken SR. League
The Mountaineers had two pitchers play for the Rockville Express this past summer. Zach Ullrich (Camp Hill, PA) made 12 appearances out of the Express bullpen. Ullrich had 3 saves and an ERA under 3.00 for the Express. Chad Smith (York, PA) a senior transfer from Fredrick Community College made 8 appearances and two starts for Rockville, who lost in the Ripken League Playoffs first round.
