FOR IMMEIDIATE RELEASE: Joel Stephens Invitational Day Two Results

MANSFIELD, Pa. – For the first time in the history of the Stephens Tournament, four teams made it through divisional play with unblemished records to claim their respective division titles. Montoursville, Bradford County, Cherry Hill and Greece all closed out tournament play with undefeated 3-0 records on Saturday to advance to the Stephens semi-finals.

Cherry Hill (NJ), winners of the Hunter/Jones division, will play Greece (NY), winners of the Palmer/Henneman division. That game will take place at noon at Shaute Field at Mansfield University.

Montoursville (PA), winners of the Heaps/Heaps division, will play the defending champion Bradford County team, winners of the Naylor/Dobson division. That game will take place at noon at Kelly Field at Smythe Park in Mansfield.

The runners-up in each division will advance to the Palmer semi-finals, which will be played at 9:00 a.m.

Elmira Heights (NY) will take on Brockville (ONT) at Kelly Field while Big Flats and Horseheads will square off at Shaute Field. The winners of those games will play for the Palmer title at noon at Stephens Field at Williamson High School.

The winner of the Stephens semi-finals will play for the title at 3:00 p.m. at Shaute Field.

SHAUTE FIELD

9:00 a.m.

Montoursville scored three runs in the top of the third inning and held off a late rally from Brockville to secure a 4-1 win in the opening game Saturday morning at Shaute Field.

Chad Jacobson earned the win on the mound for Montoursville after recording five strikeouts in four innings of work and also had one of two doubles. Scott Derbyshire was credited with the loss for Brockville.

Mark Schoch and Vince Molesky each recorded two RBI to lead Montoursville.

Pierre-Luc Istead had the lone RBI for Brockville.

Cherry Hill capitalized on Mansfield errors and walked batters to run away with a 12-2 victory in the second game of the morning at Shaute Field.

The New Jersey squad plated 12 runs on six hits after Mansfield committed four errors, allowed nine walks and hit four batters.

Andrew Hoffman went the distance on the mound, picking up the win after allowing two runs in six innings. Austin Ley, Kevin Bordner and Pat Moran each recorded two RBI for Cherry Hill.

Levi Weiskopff was credited with the loss on the mound for Mansfield after allowing seven runs in three innings. Weiskopff led the team at the plate, going 3-3 with a single, a double, a triple, an RBI and a run scored. Brian Strange had the other RBI for Mansfield.

The win for Cherry Hill guaranteed them a spot in one of the semi-finals tomorrow while the loss eliminated Mansfield from contention. Mansfield placed third in the Hunter/Jones division.

A resilient Lansing team sent 12 batters to the box and plated seven runs in the top of the seventh inning before the rally fell short in a 8-7 loss against Greece in the third game of the day at Shaute Field.

Greece entered the final inning with a 8-0 lead before going through three pitchers during the Lancing rally. Jordy Smolla came back into the game and secured the final two outs to earn the save. Mike Bellucco led the team at the plate with three RBI

Josh Rodgers was credited with the loss for Lansing, who was eliminated after dropping all three tournament games by one run. Brian Milliman led the team with two doubles and three RBI.

The defending champions from Bradford survived a late scare from Corning to win the final game of the day 3-2.

Matt Rowe scored the winning run on a double steal in the fourth inning and then Dakota Roof made a diving catch in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs and the tying run on third base to seal the win for Bradford, advancing them to the semi-finals with a chance to defend last season’s title.

Storm Strope earned the win for Bradford while Dan Telehany was credited with the loss for Corning.

Big Flats poured in seven runs in the second inning en route to a 11-1 victory over Bath in the first game of the day at Kelly Field.

Zach Homerda weaved a gem on the mound for Big Flats, allowing just two hits and one run in six innings of work.

John Morrison belted four RBI in a perfect 2-2 performance at the plate and was joined by Pete Ferguson, who had a double and three RBI.

Bath’s lone RBI came from Zach Peters.

Montoursville clinched the Heaps/Heaps division and a trip to the Stephens semi-finals with a 11-5 win over Fabius in the second game of the day at Kelly Field.

Ethan Carey was the standout for Montoursville, leading the way at the plate and picking up the win on the mound. Carey threw the complete game with six strikeouts and had a double, a triple two runs scored and five RBI at the plate.

Curtis Jacobson and Zach Clark also had RBI for Montoursville.

Lane Warner was credited with the loss for Fabius. Sam Mir had a double while Sean Emerson and Tyler Prince each had one RBI.

Montoursville will play in the Stephens semi-finals at noon on Sunday.

Cherry Hill clinched the Hunter/Jones division title with a 7-4 win over Big Flats in the third game of the day at Kelly Field.

Dan Hill picked up the win for Cherry Hill with Luke Peyton getting the save. Mike Cox led the team with a 3-4 performance at the plate while Austin Ley added a double.

Ryan Youmans was credited with the loss for Big Flats while Pete Ferguson added a double and Micah Jackson went 3-4 at the plate.

Brockville’s Matt Hummel threw the first no-hitter of the tournament as the Bunnies blanked Hornell 10-0 in the final game of the day at Kelly Field.

Hummel struck out 13 batters with only two runners reaching base in the game (both walks). Chad Brisebois had a double and two RBI and Cody Mombourquette had two RBI for Brockville.

The Bunnies advance to the Palmer semifinals.

Taylor Hackett picked up his first win on the mound as Northern Tioga defeated Lansing 4-3 in the first game of the day at Stephens Field.

Hackett went the distance and recorded an RBI in the win. Cody Whipple led the team at the plate, going 2-3 with a double and an RBI. Jay Benson had the other RBI for the Tioga team.

Nick French was credited with the loss on the mound for Lansing and also had one of three RBI for the team. Brian Milliman and Dan Sill had the other two.

Elmira Heights scored one run in the first inning and added four more over the final three innings in a 5-0 win over Corning Gray in the second game of the day at Stephens Field.

Zach Mockmer started his second game on the mound for Elmira and picked up his first win. Alek Brown came in during the sixth inning and closed it out for the second time.

Brian Ramich led Elmira at the plate with a 4-4 performance, including a run, one RBI and a stolen base. Mike Rich and Mike Lane also had an RBI for Elmira.

Brandon Keagle was credited with the loss for Corning.

Mike Strong led the Corning team after entering in the fifth inning, going 2-2 with a double.

Mike Martin picked up the win for the defending champs while Jacob Schucker had a triple.

Nick Hewitt was credited with the win for Greece while Nick Paternico went 2-2 with two runs and a stolen base.

Cory Lee picked up the loss for Northern Tioga and Trevor Adriance had the lone RBI for the team.

Northern Tioga and Lansing will play at 9:00 a.m. at Stephens Field as both teams agreed to play an extra contest.
