MANSFIELD – Montreal scored seven runs in the sixth inning to break up a 3-3 tie and win the 8th Annual Joel Stephens Invitational Tournament with a 10-3 win of Bradford County All-Stars Monday afternoon at Mansfield University’s Joseph Shaute Field. Bradford scored twice in the top of the first inning when Jamie Philippi legged out an infield hit to lead off the game and later scored Kyle Mallow grounded into a double play. Cory Raupers, who also singled later scored off a Montreal error. Bradford, who had beaten Lamm Post 5-3 in extra innings early in the day to advance to the title game, added another run in the top of the third inning before Montreal scored a solo run in the bottom of the third and tied the game on a two run double by Mark Nadler in the fourth.
Montreal, a 9-1 winner over Horseheads in a semi-final game earlier in the day, put the game out of reach in the sixth after Mike Martin replaced starter Trent Patton. Martin, who posted a tournament high 15 strikeouts in a win over Corning yesterday, took the loss. Nadler led Montreal with three hits including two doubles and four RBI’s while Scot Airey settled down after early control problems to allow two hits and strike out four in picking up the win. In the Palmer Championship, Mansfield’s Travis Rogers, Tyler Rumsey and Cody Thomas combined for a two-hit shutout in a 4-0 win over Brockville (Ont.). Rogers allowed just one hit while striking out three over five innings to pick up the win while Garrett Pollock drove in two runs with a single in the fifth.
