FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: JOEL STEPHENS INVITATIONAL DAY ONE RECAP

MANSFIELD – Saturday marked the kickoff of the Eighth Annual Joel Stephens Baseball Tournament hosted by Citizen's & Northern Bank and Mansfield University. An exciting afternoon of baseball that including 12 games in pool play began at 9:00 am and ran all day with the final games concluding around 9:00pm. An emotional opening ceremony was held at 2:00 at Shaute Field to officially kick off the tournament and remind everyone of why we honor Joel Stephens. Brockville Bunnies, a team out of Ontario, Canada, and last year's runner-up, had an impressive first day as they sit atop their division with two wins. Horseheads Post also pulled out two wins to sit atop their division. Sunday marks the second and final day of pool play with all division winners being decided after Sunday's games. CORNING GRAY   10      

MONTROSE              3

In a 9 a.m. game at Shaute Field, Josh Murdough’s grand slam keyed a seven run fourth inning and broke open a close game as Corning Gray topped Montrose 10-3. Murdough finished with five RBI.

BATH                0

MANSFIELD    1

In a 9 a.m. game at Kelly Field in Smythe Park, pitching took center stage as Mansfield defeated Bath 1-0. Jake Hartz threw a complete game shutout for Mansfield while Dan Tunison gave up one run in a complete game loss. Levi Weiskopff had three hits including the only RBI of the game in the sixth inning scoring Adam Breon.

HORSEHEADS                       4

NORTHERN TIOGA              1

In a 9 a.m. game at Joel Stephens field at Williamson High School, Horseheads defeated Northern Tioga 4-1. Chris Zelko earned the win with five strikeouts for Horseheads and was joined by Kevin Kline, Joel Green, and Mike Graham in the winning pitching effort. Rejean Archambeault led Horseheads with a double and three RBI’s while Pete Ferguson recorded one RBI. Jeremy Cook had a double for Northern Tioga. Jeffrey Woodruff II was the losing pitcher.

ELMIRA HEIGHTS    3

BROCKVILLE            9

In an 11:30 a.m. game at Shaute Field, the Brockville Bunnies led off the first inning batting through the order, scoring five runs on five hits off of Elmira Heights pitcher Jeff Case.  Bunnies pitcher Tom Green threw two scoreless innings to open the game. Brockville would add another run in second to take a 6-0 lead. Elmira Heights battled back in the third, scoring two runs on one hit. Devin Burch came on in relief for Elmira Heights in the third after Brockville added another run to take a 7-2 lead. Heights was held scoreless by Green in the fourth and Brockville tacked on two more to lead 9-2 after four innings. Heights would add one more to their cause in the sixth before falling 9-3 to the Brockville Bunnies.

CORNING                  4

TITUSVILLE               10

In an 11:30 a.m. game at Kelly Field, Titusville defeated Corning by a score of 10-4. Of the 10 runs scored by Titusville, only three were earned runs as they finished with five hits.  Joe Snyder recorded the win on the mound throwing a complete game. Joe Snyder threw a complete game for Corning in the loss.  Chris Domer hit a three run homerun  in the seventh inning for Titusville.

GREECE         2

LANSING       6

In an 11:30 a.m. game at Joel Stephens Field, Lansing recorded five unearned runs to defeat Greece 6-2. Brent Stull was the man of the day in game one for Lansing as he recorded the win on the mound while helping his own cause with 2 RBI’s. Stull teamed up with Trevor Wolf to throw a two hitter. Matt ford added two hits, including a double. Jason Nevada had the only RBI for Greece and was also the starting pitcher.

CONNEAUT              9

BATH                          2

In a 3 p.m. game at Shaute Field, both Conneaut and Bath got off on the right foot with each scoring one run in the first inning.  Conneaut would add 2 runs in the bottom of the second when Derek Burleson belted an RBI double off the left field wall scoring Brandon Ernst. The next batter, Jonathan Gogul, followed up with a single to score Burleson from second as Conneaut took a 3-1 lead. Bath looked to earn those runs back in the third when they loaded the bases off a pair of walks by Conneaut pitcher Andrew Carter, but Carter forced a flyout to end the inning. Burleson would remain active as he drove in another run in the third on a fielders choice grounder. Joe Massucci added an RBI single to put Conneaut up 5-1 after three innings. Bath looked again to rebound as Kyle Lisefski rapped a double to start the fourth inning. Eric Howell was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with no outs, but once again Andew Carter found his way out of a jam striking out two consecutive batters and drawing a flyout. Carter fell into another jam in the top of the sixth as Bath loaded the bases, but this time Carter could not escape unscathed as he walked one run in before recording his tenth strikeout to get out of the inning. Conneaut would add four more runs in the sixth to secure a 9-2 victory.

 

MONTREAL               6         

MANSFIELD              2

In a 3 p.m. game at Kelly Field, Montreal took an early 2-1 lead in the first inning and never looked back as they defeated Mansfield 6-2.  Anthony Carbone threw a complete game three hitter for Montreal while Mark Nadler rapped out two doubles. Olivier Bertrand and Guillaume Joanette each added doubles for Montreal. Timothy Shaw had one RBI for Mansfield. Travis Rogers was the losing pitcher for Mansfield.

ELMIRA HEIGHTS                5

LAMM POST                         10

In a 3 p.m. game at Joel Stephens Field, Lamm Post jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning and held off Elmira Heights to win 10-5. Nick Keggins earned the win for Lamm and Derek Wiser picked up the save. Nate Godfrey was the losing pitcher for Elmira. Alex Esposito had a big day at the plate with a double and a triple in the game. Will Gowan and Frank Peri each had two RBI’s for Lamm. 

LANSING                   4

HORSEHEADS           9

In a 6 p.m. game at Shaute Field, Horseheads batted through 11 players in the first inning to take a 7-3 lead over Lansing. Horseheads would add two more in the second and Lansing one more, before both teams went scoreless for the duration of the game. Rick Marks earned the win on the mound for Horseheads after giving up three runs in two innings of work. Joel Green came on in the third inning to close the game and earn the save. Brian Milliman picked up the loss as he gave up seven runs in the first inning before being relieved. Rejean Archambault went 2-4 from the plate with three RBI’s and a double while Nick Ambrunzo also had a double and three RBI’s.

BROCKVILLE            8

BIG FLATS                 5

In a 6 p.m. game at Kelly Field, Brockville added two security runs in the top of the seventh to secure an 8-5 victory over Big Flats. Adam Dayton threw all seven innings for Brockville to pick up the win while Jess Kelley was credited with the loss for Big Flats. Kyle Barclay recorded two RBI’s for Brockville while Matt Hummell, Zack Jaslin, and Dan Hannah each added one. Dylan Shope recorded one RBI for Big Flats. Brockville finished day one undefeated at 2-0.

BRADFORD               4

MONTROSE              1

In a 6 p.m. game at Joel Stephens Field, Bradford took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning and held on to win 4-1 over Montrose. Thomas Johnson picked up the win for Bradford while Bill Overfield was credited with the loss for Montrose. Curt Cordeiro picked up the save for Bradford. Adam Longacre recorded one double for Montrose. Johnson helped his cause with a double and an RBI for Bradford.
