JOEL STEPHENS INVITATIONAL
DAY THREE
MANSFIELD
– Corning Grey won twice on Saturday to become the first team to qualify for
the Joel Stephens Invitational Championship. Corning shutout FMS 4-0 and downed
Montrose 6-1 to win the Naylor/Dobson Division with a 3-0 mark. Brockville (ONT)
took the lead in the tough Heaps/Heaps Division beating Conneaut 3-1 to improve
to 2-0.
Mansfield
dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to
Greece
to end its divisional play with a 2-1 record and will have to wait until the
completion of games Sunday to see if they advance to the Stephens or Palmer
Championship round on Monday. Horseheads kept its hopes alive in the Plamer/Henneman
Division by improving to 1-1 with a 3-2 win over
Greece
.
Saturday’s 11 game schedule will be followed by 10 games on Sunday to
determine who advance to the championship brackets. The four divisional winners
will play for the Joel Stephens Championship on Monday while the four divisional
runner-ups will vie for the Josh Palmer Championship also on Monday.

Bath
scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 5-4 lead and hold off
Owego for a 5-4 win. Brandon Wilson picked up the win, pitching the last inning
and a third.
Bath
starter Dan Tunison struck out nine, scattered three hits with no walks and did
not give up an earned run in five innings of work.

Syracuse
scored four runs in the first inning on their way to an 11-0 shutout over
Ferris-Goodrich. Ryan Cole doubled in two runs in the first inning and went 3-5
with two doubles and two RBI to pace a 10-hit attack by
Syracuse
. Three pitchers combined for the shutout with Cory Nelson going the first four
innings to get credit for the win. Nelson gave up three hits while striking out
four.

game at Kelly Field, Lamm Post – the defending Joel Stephens Champions –
got a complete game three-hitter from Scott Steimer. Lamm Post scored all the
runs they would need with four runs in the second inning keyed by a two-run
triple by Rob Maxwell.

scored their only run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Shaun Merrill.

In a 6 p.m. game at Williamson High School, Corning won its third straight game
as C.J. Huyett threw a complete game five-hitter striking out nine. Jeremy
Blackwell went 3-3 with three RBI while Brandon Lewis was 2-4 with a double and
RBI.
Corning
clinched first place in the Naylor Dobson to gain a berth in the Joel Stephens
Championship bracket on Monday.

In a 6 p.m. game at Kelly Field, Brockville rallied to beat Conneaut 3-1 behind
a complete game two-hitter from Derek Howe who struck out five.
Ivan Cherwinski, Cody Cassellman and Howe all drove in runs for
Brockville
which took the lead in the Heaps/Heaps Division with a 2-0 mark.
