MANSFIELD, BRADFORD COUNTY AND ONTARIO ALL WIN OPEN DAY GAMES AT SIXTH ANNUAL JOEL STEPHENS TOURNAMENT
MANSFIELD – Mansfield, Bradford County and Ontario (Canada) all recorded wins Friday evening in the opening day of the Sixth Annual Joel Stephens Invitational Tournament.
Mansfield Rob Brant threw a complete game scattering five hits and striking out nine in a 6-1 win over Horseheads. Mansfield scored twice in the third inning on an rbi singles by Zach Stager and Adam Breon. Horseheads cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by Tony Battisti but could pull no closer. Nate James went the distance to take the loss. Mansfield’s Kevin Hill had the games only extra base hit with an RBI double in the sixth inning.
Ontario Maple Leafs edged Elmira Heights 4-2 behind a complete game four hitter by Greg Connor. Matt Richardson led the Maple Leafs at the plate going 3-4 with three stolen bases. Mike Firtzgerald drove in two runs. Jeremy Peck went the distance for Elmira Heights with Ken Hartnett getting two of Elmira Heights four hits.
Bradford County rallied from a 4-0 deficit and scored five runs over the fifth and sixth inning in a 7-4 win over Corning. The game was called at the end of six innings due to darkness. Fred McNeal came in relief of starter Ryan Foster in the third inning and held Corning scoreless to earn the win. Don Warner drove in four runs and Brandon Fitzwater drove in two runs. Nat Mutusick double and drove in a run for Corning which committed six errors in the loss.
11 games are scheduled for Saturday with opening ceremonies set for 2 p.m. at Shaute Field.
