FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: CORNINGS LATE RALLY FALLS SHORT AS
FERRIS-GOODRIDGE CAPTURES 5TH ANNUAL JOEL STEPHENS WOODEN BAT
TOURNAMENT – HORNELL WINS JOSH PALMER DIVISION TITLE
Joel Stephens Championship Game
MANSFIELD – Corning scored three runs in the bottom of the
seventh and had the bases loaded with two outs, but could not push across the
tying run as Ferris-Goodridge held on to a 5-4 victory in the Championship Game
of the 5th Annual Joel Stephens American Legion Wooden Bat Tournament
Sunday afternoon at Shaute Field.
Ferris-Goodridge opened the scoring with a solo run in the
first on a rbi single by Cory LoPresti. They would increase the lead to 3-0 with
two more runs in the third.
Corning got on the board when George Matusick scored off an
error in the bottom of the third to close the gap to 3-1. Ferris-Goodridge added
solo runs in the fourth and seventh inning to take a 5-1 lead into the bottom of
the seventh.
Corning loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with
George Matusick, Andrew Baker and Bryan Orso each drawing a walk to open the
inning. After an out, pinch hitter Cory Hmiel drew a walk to force in one run
and Corning would score two more runs on a ground out and error to pull to 5-4
with two outs and the bases loaded. But a called third strike on the next batter
ended the game.
Corning had the bases loaded in the first and second innings
but could not score and stranded 14 runners in the game.
Ferris-Goodridge, which won the first Joel Stephens
Tournament in 1999, became the first two-time champion in Tournament history.
