RELEASE DATE: 5/14/05 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: KUTZTOWN CAPTURES FINAL RACE OF DAY TO EDGE OUT PSAC WOMEN TITLE – SHIPPENSBURG OUTDISTANCES THE FIELD FOR MEN’S TITLE IN FINAL DAY OF PSAC TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIP MANSFIELD – In perhaps one of the closest and most exciting finishes in PSAC Women’s Track and Field history, Kutztown won the meets final event, the 4 x 400 relay to edge out Shippensburg, Indiana and Slippery Rock for the women’s title. Shippensburg coasted to the men’s title, defeating Kutztown and Slippery Rock by 57 points. It concluded three days of championship competition at Mansfield University’s Robert T. Maxson Track. Going into the final race of the day, Kutztown had 83.5 team points to Slippery Rock’s 82.50. IUP and Shippensburg were nipping on their heels with 82 and 81 points respectively. Kutztown won the 4 x 400 relay when anchor Laura Kline moved past Shippensburg’s anchor on the backstretch to pull out the win. Shippensburg’s men had four individual winners on the last day of competition scoring 145 team points to Slippery Rock and Kutztown’s 88 points. IUP was fourth at 73 points. Brad Rager of California was named the Male MVP of the Championship after winning the 200 and 400 meters. Tunisia Lacy was named Women’s MVP after posting wins in the triple jump, long jump and 100 hurdles. Christina Carpenter of Millersville repeated as the 100 and 200 champion to be selected the Women’s Outstanding Track Performer while Nicole James of West Chester earned the Women’s Outstanding Field Performer by winning the shot put and discus. Rager was also the Men’s Outstanding Track Performer with Preston Gibbs of Slippery Rock named the Men’s Outstanding Field Performer after winning triple jump and finishing third in the long jump.
Women’s Discus Nicole James of West Chester earned her second PSAC title in two days as she set a new stadium record and provisionally qualified for Nationals with a throw of 150’03” in the discus. Kutztown’s Elizabeth Lord came in second with a throw of 142’09”, while Ginger Williams of Lock Haven earned third with a throw of 134’10”. Kutztown’s Kaleena Lockard and Alison Maurer earned fourth and fifth respectively, while Kristie Taras of Slippery Rock finished sixth. Women’s 5,000 Meter Run Mindy Sawtelle repeated her PSAC title for the third straight time, breaking a new track record and provisionally qualifying for nationals with a time of 17:20.32 in the 5,000 meter run. Vanessa Andes of East Stroudsburg came in second (18:12.91), while Edinboro’s Rachel Lanzel came in third (18:28.82). IUP’s Nicole Blaesser, Kutztown’s Molly Laer and Edinboro’s Lindsay Roberts earned fourth, fifth, and sixth. Women’s 3,000 Meter Steeplechase Mansfield University’s Rachel Hall (11:20.13) and Charity Learn (11:25.75) literally ran away with the 3,000 meter steeplechase, taking first and second place, while earning a provisional qualifier for Nationals and setting a new stadium record. Kutztown’s Desiree Bower earned third (11:35.41), while IUP’s Meaghan Strong, Slippery Rock’s Kristen Jordan and Clarion’s Tasha Wheatly finished fourth, fifth and sixth. Women’s 4x100 Meter Relay East Stroudsburg (48.37) edged Slippery Rock (48.50) to earn first place in the 4x100 meter relay. Shippensburg came in third with a time of (48.65), while Lock Haven and Mansfield finished fourth and fifth. Men’s 4x100 Meter Relay IUP set a new stadium record with a time of (41.76) in the men’s 4x100 meter relay. Kutztown came in second with a time of (41.92), edging Shippensburg, who placed third (41.98). Cheyney and Slippery Rock finished fourth a fifth. Men’s Shot Put Kutztown’s Steve Tyson set a new stadium record with a throw of 50’11 ½” to earn his first PSAC title. Tyson was followed by Shippensburg’s Adam Escamilla (50’09”) and Eric Price of Slippery Rock (50’01 ½”). P.J. Dakes of West Chester, Jeremy Burger of East Stroudsburg and Christopher Feighner of Kutztown placed fourth, fifth and sixth. Men’s 3,000 Meter Steeplechase Lock Haven’s Billy Buckenmeyer set a new stadium record in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:30.49. Chris Robson of Lock Haven finished second (9:35.67), while Mansfield University’s Josh Wooten came in third place with a time of (9:37.60). Dan Field of Edinboro, Stephen Lobianco of Shippensburg and Dustin Willgohs of Shippensburg finished fourth, fifth and sixth respectively. Men’s High Jump After finishing second last year, Jim Dempsey of Lock Haven set a new stadium record with a jump of 6’09” to win the PSAC high jump title. Steve Brenner of Slippery Rock placed second (6’07”), while West Chester’s Eric Broadbent finished third (6’05”). Malcolm Huggins of East Stroudsburg, Jake D’Arcangelo of Shippensburg, and Paul Schwab of Slippery Rock finished fourth, fifth and sixth. Men’s Triple Jump Slippery Rock’s Preston Gibbs, last year’s fifth place finisher, took top honors with a stadium record 47-07.50 mark. Eric Broadbent of West Chester was second at 47-04.25 while Jermaine Clayton of IUP finished third at 46-00.00. Shippensburg’s Carl Dean was fourth followed by Malcom Huggins of Edinboro and Maurice Barbour of Shippensburg. Women’s Javelin Kelly Frick of Shippensburg led a field of four provisional qualifiers in the women’s javelin. Frick’s winning toss of 147-09 was more than five feet longer than runner up Calista Shoaff of Slippery Rock (142-08). Alyssa Kilgore of Shippensburg was third at 141-08 and East Stroudsburg’s Christa Sandvig also hit a NCAA provisional distance of 135-04. Mansfield’s Casey Root set a school record with a mark of 129-05 to finish fifth with Nicole Angelisanti of Shippensburg was sixth. Men’s Pole Vault Kutztown’s Machael Provenzano topped the field that featured the top eight finisher breaking the stadium record. Provenzano, last year’s fifth place finisher, was six inches better than the next competitor at 15-08.00. Slippery Rock’s Tim Tray was second at 15-02.00 with teammate Erik Dravonstott and California’s Scott Harris tying for third on jumps at the same height. Joe Labarbera of Slippery Rock was fifth and Troy Litten of Shippensburg sixth, all at 15-02. Men’s 1500 Shippensburg’s John Somers, last year’s runner up, took home the gold with a winning time of 4:02.61. Teammate Richard Hansloven was second at 4:03.41 with East Stroudsburg’s Iuri Pinto third with a time of 4:03.86. Teammate Drew Nesbit was fourth followed by Joe Wiegner of Lock Haven and Eric Kruttschnitt of IUP. Women’s 1500 Danielle Mousley of Kutztown posted a winning time of 4:47.56 outdistancing IUP’s Erica Hoffman by a little over two seconds. Kelly Richards of Edinboro was third wat 4:49.81 with Kat Davey of Lock Haven fourth followed by Katie Farnsworth of IUP and Lock Haven’s Brittany Turner. Men’s 110 Hurdles IUP’s Ron Jett took top honors with a NCAA provisional time of 14.69 followed by Michael Rucker of East Stroudsburg (14.84). Tyree Cooper of Cheyney was third at 14.89. Vonkurt Redley of Kutztown was furth followed by Shawn Clancy of Lock Haven and Bernard Richards of Shippensburg. Women’s 100 Hurdles Last year’s runner-up Tunisia Lacy of Shippensburg moved to the top of the pack with a winning NCAA provisional time of 14.59 to head a field of four runners who broke the stadium record. Sunny Daugherty of Slippery was second at 14.73 while East Stroudsburg Jayme Ferraro was third (14.81) edging Danielle Scardino of West Chester by .01 of a second. Jaclyn Pfeiffer of Kutztown was fifth ahead of IUP’s Gabrielle Hoffman. Men’s Javelin Rarely held in the stadium before the main crowd, the men’s javelin proved one of the most entertaining events of the championship. The top eight finishers all posted NCAA provisionally qualifying distances with top six all breaking the 200 foot mark. Kutztown’s Dan Wilson who was sixth in last year’s competition, edged out Shippensburg John Pacovsky by one inch. Wilson threw a stadium record 209-01 to Pacovsky 209-00. Slippery Rock’s Tony Carr was third (207-11) followed by Nathan Reider of Shippensburg and IUP’s Mike Rairigh and Rob Conrad. Women’s 400 Meter East Stroudsburg’s Tawny Youtz set a new stadium record with a winning time of 56.89. Dana Glaviano of West Chester was second at 57.28 followed by Maggie Broden of Lock Haven (57.30). Megan Fogle of Shippensburg took fourth place with Lauren Fisher of IUP and Slippery Rock’s Allison Gardner sixth. Men’s 400 Meter California freshman Bradley Rager bested the field with a time of 48.40 followed by David Bartolomucci of Kutztown (48.92). Jason Kilgore of West Chester was placed third (48.99) followed by Wyatt Hall of Millersville, Nehemiah Leary of West Chester and Gerald Christian of Slippery Rock. Men’s 100 Meter Shippensburg’s Alton Richards and Jamal James finished first and second in the 100 meters. Richards 10.65 time was an NCAA Provisional qualifier with James finishing at 10.69. Jake Wieder of Kutztown was third (10.80) followed by IUP’s Lamar Graham, De Andre Pearson of IUP and Bloomsburg’s Greg McGhee. Women’s 100 Meter Millersville’s Christina Carpenter won her third straight 100 title with a time provisional time and stadium record 11.93. Kristen Jones of Slippery Rock was second at 12.03 while Mansfield’s Amanda Fedish set a new school record with a third place time of 12.33. It was the highest finish for a MU women’s sprinter at the PSAC Championship in school history. Theresa Manera of East Stroudsburg was fourth followed by Shippensburg’s Funmilola Yerokun and Millersville’s Sue Fassi. Men’s 800 Meter Freshman Sean Strauman of IUP won the 800 with a provisional and stadium record of 1:52.89. Kenrick Marsh of Shippensburg was second at 1:54.17 with West Chester’s Ryan Waltermyer third (1:55.44). Bor Innin of East Stroudsburg was fourth followed by Joe Wiegner of Lock Haven and Billy Boorse of Kutztown Women’s 800 Meter Bloomsburg had a champion in Cherise Mercer who posted a stadium record and NCAA provisional time of 2:13.26. She was followed by Lindsey Incorvati at 2:17.53 and Michele Kelly of Edinboro (2:20.23). Mansfield’s Steph Cadwell just missed All-PSAC honors with a fourth place time of 2:20.52 with Katie Farnsworth of IUP and Brittany Turner of Lock Haven finishing fifth and sixth. Men’s 400 Meter Hurdles Shippensburg’s Mark Piccolo took top honors after finishing third in last year’s championship. Piccolo broke the stadium record with a provisional time of 52.17. Tony Hegedus of Kutztown was second with a provisional time of 52.63 with California’s Tony Morinello third. Mike Brito of Lock Haven was fourth followed by Slippery Rock’s Nate Shadeck and Andy Tessena. Women’s 400 Meter Hurdles Kutztown’s Laura Kline successfully defended her PSAC title in the 400 meter hurdles with a stadium record and provisional qualifying time of 1:03.78. She was followed by Mary Ewanich of Lock Haven (1:03.77) and a Kutztown trio of Sara Otis, Jaclyn Pfeiffer and Talia McKinney. East Stroudsburg’s Jayme Ferraro was sixth. Men’s 200 Meter California’s Bradley Rager, who finished sixth last year, blazed the track with a winning time of 21.52. Shippensburg’s Jamal James was second (21.60) while last year’s champion Alton Richards finished third (21.68). Lamar Grahma of IUP was fourth followed by Gerald Christian of Slippery and Cheyney’s Orlando Payton Women’s 200 Meter Millersville’s Christina Carpenter defended her 200 title with a winning time of 24.73 for a new stadium record. Kristen Jones of Slippery Rock was second at 25.32 with West Chester’s Dana Glaviano third (25.36). Mansfield’s Amanda Fedish set a new school record in the 200 with a time of 25.74 to finish fourth followed by East Stroudsburg’s Theresa Manera and Maggie Borden of Lock Haven. Men’s 5,000 Meter In one of the most anticipated races of the Championship, Shippensburg’s Daniel Helfrick defended his crown and ran away from the pack with a stadium record 15:02.81. Jorge Medina of IUP was second at 15:10.27 with Lock Haven’s Chris Cowan third (15:13.60). Ryan Con of Edinboro was fourth followed by Aaron Benson of Lock Haven and Mansfield’s Chris Cummings. Women’s 3,000 Meter IUP’s Mindy Sawtelle ran away from the competition a stadium record and provisional qualifying time of 10:04.88 to earn her second 3,000 title. East Stroudsburg’s Vanessa Andes was second at 10:23.35 with Molly Lane of Kutztown third (10:31.50). Edinboro’s Lisa Gallagher was fourth followed by Nicole Blaesser of IUP and Edinboro’s Kelly Richards.
