FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: HEPTATHLON AND DECATHLON BATTLES HEAT UP IN DAY ONE OF PSAC TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIP 

MANSFIELD – Although the weather cooled down by 20 degree’s from yesterday’s 82 degree reading, the action on Robert T. Maxson Track was still hot in the opening day of the PSAC Track and Field Championship Thursday.

 In the decathlon, five athletes rose to the top after finishing the 100m, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400m.

 Kutztown’s Justin Richards is a the top of the pack with 3,447 points after posting first place finishes in the 100 (11.22) and 400 (50.87) while finishing second in the high jump (6.40m) and third in the shot put (6.40m) and high jump (1.81).

 Bill Jordan of Slippery Rock is in second place with 3320 points including first in the long jump (6.40). Paul Schwab of Slippery Rock trails his teammate with 3217 point including a first place finish in the high jump (1.90).
 

Shawn Clancy of Lock Haven is in fourth place with 3,142 points while James Knox of Millersville in fifth place with 2,964 points, winning the shot put with a toss of 13.66m.

 The overall winner will be decided tomorrow after the 110 hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m.

 In the women’s heptathlon, just four points separate the top two athletes after the competitions of the 110 hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200m.

 Kutztown’s Renee Marchand tops the field with 2,603 points, while IUP’s Becky Bullard is nipping at her heels with 2,599 points. Marchand didn’t win any of the four events on day one, but was second in all four events on the day. Bullard took first in the high jump (1.65m).

 Lauren Walters of Slippery Rock is third with 2,488 points, including a first place finish in the shot put (10.67). Edinboro’s Kristen Malloy is in fourth place with 2,378 after winning both the 100 hurdles (15.71) and 200 (26.87).

 The finals of the both events will be held tomorrow along with the be start of the individual events including the finals in the women’s pole vault, high jump, long jump and shot put. The men’s discus and long jump will also be held as will the finals in the men’s and women’s 10,000.
