RELEASE DATE: 5/10/05 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MANSFIELD TO HOST PSAC TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIP – FIRST TIME 74TH ANNUAL MEET COMES TO MANSFIELD MANSFIELD – Mansfield University head track and field coach Mike Rohl is hoping charity begins at home when the Mountaineers host the 74th annual Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Track and Field Championship starting this Thursday and running through Saturday on the Robert T. Maxson Track at Karl Van Norman Field. It marks the first time the Track and Field Championship will be held at Mansfield since its inception in 1928. “We’re pleased and excited to welcome the rest of the conference to Mansfield,” said Rohl. “This is one of the premier NCAA Division II Championships in the country featuring some of the best track and field performers in all of Division II. It’s great for our program, great for the area, and great for our kids.” "This is such an outstanding field," continued Rohl. "That it is conceivable that ever event record at Maxson Track could be broken." More than 300 of the best athletes and coaches in the PSAC will participate with an expected large and enthusiastic crowd of onlookers from the all over the northeast. All 14 PSAC school will be represented with Slippery Rock University trying to defend both their men’s and women’s titles. Mansfield will be well represented with junior Charity Learn the top rated runner in the women’s steeplechase and Chris Cummings attempting to beat out the rest of the field in the highly anticipated men’s 5000. The Championship kicks off on Thursday morning at 10 am with the first day of the decathlon and heptathlon. Friday features the conclusion of the decathlon and heptathlon, along with the start both the track and field events. The finals of the women’s pole vault, high jump, long jump and shot put will be decided Friday along with the men’s discus and long jump. Saturday is championship day with opening ceremonies being held at 11 am followed by the final of all the remaining men’s and women’s events. Admission is $7 per adult and $2 per student for each day Friday and Saturday.
