RELEASE DATE: 5/14/05 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: IUP WOMEN TOOK CONTROL OF FIRST PLACE AFTER TRAILING ONE POINT COMING INTO TODAY’S EVENTS --SLIPPERY ROCK MEN HOLD ONTO A SOLID LEAD DURING DAY THREE EVENTS AT THE PSAC TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS MANSFIELD- The IUP women and Slippery Rock men have taken control of the standings on the third day of competition for the PSAC Track and Field Championships at the Robert T. Maxson Track. In team scoring on the women’s side, IUP (50 points) holds the lead over Kutztown and Slippery Rock ( 43.50) who are tied for second place after ten events. Lock Haven is in fourth place (43), followed by Shippensburg (30). East Stroudsburg and Mansfield are tied for sixth place (28), followed by West Chester (23), Edinboro (13), Millersville (6), and Clarion (1). On the men’s side, Slippery Rock (49) holds a commanding lead after eight events over second place Shippensburg (38) and third place Lock Haven (36). Kutztown is in fourth (31), followed by IUP (26), East Stroudsburg (21), Edinboro (14), West Chester (10), Mansfield (6), Bloomsburg (6), Millersville (5), and Cheyney (5). Women’s Discus Nicole James of West Chester earned her second PSAC title in two days as she set a new stadium record and provisionally qualified for Nationals with a throw of 150’03” in the discus. Kutztown’s Elizabeth Lord came in second with a throw of 142’09”, while Ginger Williams of Lock Haven earned third with a throw of 134’10”. Kutztown’s Kaleena Lockard and Alison Maurer earned fourth and fifth respectively, while Kristie Taras of Slippery Rock finished sixth. Women’s 5,000 Meter Run Mindy Sawtelle repeated her PSAC title, breaking a new track record and provisionally qualifying for nationals with a time of 17:20.32 in the 5,000 meter run. Vanessa Andes of East Stroudsburg came in second (18:12.91), while Edinboro’s Rachel Lanzel came in third (18:28.82). IUP’s Nicole Blaesser, Kutztown’s Molly Laer and Edinboro’s Lindsay Roberts earned fourth, fifth, and sixth. Women’s 3,000 Meter Steeplechase Mansfield University’s Rachel Hall (11:20.13) and Charity Learn (11:25.75) literally ran away with the 3,000 meter steeplechase, taking first and second place, while earning a provisional qualifier for Nationals and setting a new stadium record. Kutztown’s Desiree Bower earned third (11:35.41), while IUP’s Meaghan Strong, Slippery Rock’s Kristen Jordan and Clarion’s Tasha Wheatly finished fourth, fifth and sixth. Women’s 4x100 Meter Relay East Stroudsburg (48.37) edged Slippery Rock (48.50) to earn first place in the 4x100 meter relay. Shippensburg came in third with a time of (48.65), while Lock Haven and Mansfield finished fourth and fifth. Men’s 4x100 Meter Relay IUP set a new stadium record with a time of (41.76) in the men’s 4x100 meter relay. Kutztown came in second with a time of (41.92), edging Shippensburg, who placed third (41.98). Cheyney and Slippery Rock finished fourth a fifth. Men’s Shot Put Kutztown’s Steve Tyson set a new stadium record with a throw of 50’11 ½” to earn his first PSAC title. Tyson was followed by Shippensburg’s Adam Escamilla (50’09”) and Eric Price of Slippery Rock (50’01 ½”). P.J. Dakes of West Chester, Jeremy Burger of East Stroudsburg and Christopher Feighner of Kutztown placed fourth, fifth and sixth. Men’s 3,000 Meter Steeplechase Lock Haven’s Billy Buckenmeyer set a new stadium record in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:30.49. Chris Robson of Lock Haven finished second (9:35.67), while Mansfield University’s Josh Wooten came in third place with a time of (9:37.60). Dan Field of Edinboro, Stephen Lobianco of Shippensburg and Dustin Willgohs of Shippensburg finished fourth, fifth and sixth respectively. Men’s High Jump After finishing second last year, Jim Dempsey of Lock Haven set a new stadium record with a jump of 6’09” to win the PSAC high jump title. Steve Brenner of Slippery Rock placed second (6’07”), while West Chester’s Eric Broadbent finished third (6’05”). Malcolm Huggins of East Stroudsburg, Jake D’Arcangelo of Shippensburg, and Paul Schwab of Slippery Rock finished fourth, fifth and sixth.
