Release Date: 5/14/04 Tennis Ball Race' to Benefit MU Women's Soccer & Several Local Groups The Mansfield University women's soccer program will be using balls of another kind when it hosts the 1st Annual Great Tennis Ball Race on Saturday, June 12. "We tried to come up with a fun way to raise money for the women's soccer program and area charities," said race organizer and MU head women soccer coach Tim Dempsey. "With the hills we have on campus, we thought a tennis ball race would be just the ticket." Held as part of Alumni Weekend, the tennis ball race features a course through the heart of the university. Monetary prizes will be awarded to the first three balls crossing the finish line. Not only will the "Great Tennis Ball Race" help the women's soccer program, but 30% of all money raised will go to three local charities. . "Obviously, I want to increase the level of scholarship dollars our women's soccer program can give to the student-athletes., said Dempsey. " But I have always been a big believer in giving back to the community when we can. I want our community to support us and in turn I want to support the community." The three groups local charities selected are 1) The MRI Unit at Sailors and Soldiers Hospital in Wellsboro, 2) a donation to Camp Dost in Millville, PA in the name of Isaiah Compton (a local 2nd grader diagnosed with lymphoma in December of last year), and 3) The Mansfield Area United Fund 50% of the proceeds will go to the women's soccer team, 30% to the local charitable groups, and 20% will be divided among the top 3 tennis balls to race down the hills The cost is $5/ball or 5 balls for $20 and may be purchased from any member of the MU women's soccer program or coach Dempsey at 662-4454 or contact him at tdempsey@mansfield.edu. |
