RELEASE DATE: 8/11/09 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mansfield University head coach Tim Dempsey announces 2009 recruiting class and schedule MANSFIELD – Mansfield University head women’s soccer coach Tim Dempsey has announced his 2009 recruiting class and regular season schedule. Dempsey, entering his eighth season at the helm of the Mountaineer program, has 25 players listed on his preseason-roster including 17 returning veterans and eight newcomers. “I’m pretty pleased with the recruiting class,” said Dempsey. “The class addresses some of our needs, and along with our returning veterans, should make us an improved program.” Mansfield University Women’s Soccer 2009 Recruiting Class Rachel Hayes (Millville/Millville) – Four-year starter at Millville High School where she scored 42 career goals. Set a freshman school record with 13 goals and served a team captain her senior season. PIAA District IC Moust Ourstanding Female Athlete in 2008-09 as well as Heartland Academic All-Star. Team MVP and All-Star selection. Also standout softball pitcher with school record 585 strikeouts. Hayes is majoring in business administration. Kaitlin Keiper (Danielsville/Northampton) – Four-year member of Northampton High School women’s soccer team. Projected to play defender in college. Enters MU as an undecided major (Academic Exploration Program) Alicia Melnick (Audobon/Methacton) – Two-year member of women’s soccer program at Methacton High School earning team MVP and Suburban One All-League honors as a senior. Also excelled in track earning state and national qualifier in the sprints. Melnick will major in biology at Mansfield. Erika Moyer (Miffllinburg/Mifflinburg) – Four-year letterwinner at Mifflinburg High School earning second team All-League honors. Also excelled at track earning first team All-League honors and team captain in junior and senior seasons. Played three years as point guard on basketball team. Expected to play at forward in college. Erika will be majoring nutrition and dietetics. Amanda Quinn (Prospect Park/Interboro) – Played four seasons of soccer at Interboro High School earning All-Delco honors in sophomore, junior and senior seasons. Team captain as senior and also served as team captain for Interboro soccer club. Also softball standout earning All-Delco post-season honors. Honor student who will major in elementary education. Cortney Spertzel (New Cumberland/Cedar Cliff) – Played four seasons of soccer at Cedar Cliff High school earning All-Mid-Penn Commonwealth honors sophomore, junior and senior year as well as team MVP in both her junior and senior years. Played for the Hershey Tidal Force Soccer club and was also a State Olympic Development (ODP) player for four years and a Regional ODP player for one of those years. Cortney enters MU undecided in a major, but is leaning toward a degree program in Psychology. Caitlyn Weems (Virginia Beach, VA/First Colonial) – Four-year starter at Bayside High School where she twice earned All-District honors. Played five seasons for the NIKE Rush soccer team and two years of ODP soccer. Weems plans on studying psychology and counseling at Mansfield. Alexis Wilhelm (Annville/Northern Lebanon) – Played four years of varsity soccer at Northern Lebanon High School the last three as the starting goalkeeper. Set a school record in career shutouts during that time, and twice was named to the Lancaster-Lebanon All-star team. She was also a member of the varsity basketball team from her sophomore year on and a starter in her junior and senior years. Alexis will be majoring in history. The Mountaineers open their 18-game regular season when they host Goldey Beacom College on Aug. 28.
