RELEASE DATE: 8/28/09 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mansfield women’s soccer blanks Goldey-Beacom 3-0 on season opener – Senior Katie Parsnik scores two goals MANSFIELD – Senior Katie Parsnik scored two goals and freshman Cortney Spertzel added another to lead Mansfield to a 3-0 win over Goldey-Beacom (DE) in an NCAA Division II women’s soccer matchup Friday afternoon in the season opener for both teams. “It’s a good way to start the season,” said head coach Tim Dempsey. “It was a little frustrating in the first half when we just couldn’t seem to put the ball in the net despite a lot of good chances, but we moved the ball and got a lot of people involved in the offense.” Mansfield dominated the game offensively including holding a 35-2 shot advantage. The Mountaineers outshot Goldey-Beacom 16-1 in the first half but couldn’t get the ball past goalie Kristin Degenhardt as the teams battled to a 0-0 halftime tie in soggy conditions. Parsnik scored her first goal in the 48th minute drilling the ball off the crossbar and into the net from 20 yards out. A little over seven minutes later Spertzel took a pass from Kaitlyn McBride to give Mansfield a 2-0 lead. The Mountaineers got their third goal in the 81st minute with Parsnik put back a ball that deflected off a defender on a corner kick. Junior Samantha DeLiere picked up her first career shutout stopping two shots on goal including a breakaway in the first half. It was Mansfield’s first season opening win since recording a 2-0 victory over Georgian Court to open the 2005 season Mansfield travels to Lock Haven on Sunday to play Ohio Valley.
