FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Women's Soccer Prepares for Fourth Annual Tennis Ball Race

MANSFIELD -- The Mountaineer women's soccer team will hold the fourth annual tennis ball race on June 9th to raise money for the soccer program and for local charities. Last season, the Mountaineers raised nearly $1800 which was split between the winning tennis balls, the soccer program and four local charities.

"We had such great success last year and we're hoping for an even higher number of entries this year," said head soccer coach Tim Dempsey.

The theme is simple. For $5.00 you can purchase a tennis ball. On June 9th all the tennis balls purchased will be released downhill on campus. The first three balls funneled into the chute at the bottom of the hill will win cash prizes.

The first ball down the hill is worth $250 with the second worth $100 and the third worth $50.

50% of the total money brought in will go to the women's soccer program while the remaining money will be divided up amongst local charities.

Last year, Dempsey and the soccer program donated $600 to four local organizations.  The Mansfield Area United Fund received $200 while The Food Shelf received $150. John Holleran, representing the Little League, accepted a check for $150 and  Four Paws Rescue and Adoption Center received $100.

"Our goal for this year is to sell 500 tennis balls before the race," says Dempsey.

You can purchase tennis balls by seeing any Mountaineer soccer player or by contacting coach Dempsey (tdempsey@mansfield.edu)
