FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: WOMEN’S SOCCER DOWNS UPJ 7-1 – SETS SCHOOL RECORD FOR WINS – FRESHMAN LYNDI KEISER SCHOOL RECORD FOR GOALS IN SEASON

JOHNSTOWN – Colleen Corcoran scored two goals with five other Mountaineers also scoring including freshman Lyndi Keiser who set a new single season goal record as Mansfield beat University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown 7-1 in women’s soccer Saturday afternoon.

“We gave a good overall effort,” said head coach Tim Dempsey. “We knocked the ball around pretty well and gave ourselves a lot of chances.”

The win was the fifth of the season for the for the improving Mountaineer team and the most in a season in the program’s four year history. The seven goals in the game also set a school record for goals in a game surpassing the five goals in a win over Juniata earlier this season.

Lyndi Keiser, the Mountaineers freshman scoring sensation, broke the school record of goals in a season set by Megan Colby with six in 2002 when she headed in a rebound off the goalie just under seven minutes into the game.

Corcoran scored her first goal of the afternoon in the 24th minute scoring on a rebound off a shot by Keiser. Kelly Jennings would make it 3-0 five minutes later when she beat the goalkeeper to the ball 20-yards out and chipped it into the net.

Erica Madden would give the Mountaineers a 4-0 halftime lead after scoring from 15 yards out off a crossing pass from Vanessa Wengen.

Corcoran would score her second goal of the game 14 minutes into the second half hitting a left footed shot to the far post off an assist by Keiser. Amy Dominick then scored her first goal of the season off a header.

UPJ’s Kellie Stevens broke up the shutout with a goal in the 84th minute before Mountaineers Caroline Furmato rounded out the scoring with a goal off an assist by Kelly Jennings with 15 second remaining in the game.

Julie Miller stopped three shots to shutout UPJ in the first half while Justine Segear recorded two stops in the second half. The Mountaineers held a 30-8 advantage on shots.

Mansfield improves to 5-6-3 overall while Pitt-Johnstown falls to 4-7-0. The Mountaineers travel to Bloomsburg on Wednesday.
