FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MOUNTIES SHUTOUT JUNIATA TO IMPROVE TO 4-1-1 ON SEASON – BEST START IN SCHOOL HISTORY

MANSFIELD – Colleen Corcoran, Lyndi Keiser, Robyn Travisano, Caroline Furmato and Vanessa Wengen each scored a goal to lead Mansfield to a 5-0 win over Juniata College in a non-conference women’s soccer game at Mansfield Thursday afternoon.

“For the most part we played well,” said head coach Tim Dempsey. “We had an opportunity to use a lot of different players and saw some good things out there from many of them. I thought Abby Matsinger had a very strong game, winning almost ever contested ball in the second half.”

Corcoran opened the scoring chipping the ball over the goalie’s head from 20-yards out 11 minutes into the game with freshman Lyndi Keiser drilling a shot into the right corner of the goal for her third goal of the season giving Mansfield a 2-0 lead.

Robyn Travisano put in the Mountaineers third goal of the first half off a rebound on a corner kick with 14 minutes remaining before intermission.

Sophomore Caroline Furmato scored her first goal of the season a little over 20 minutes into the second half, lofting a pass from Amy Dominick over the goalie’s head. Vanessa Wengen scored the game’s final goal on a header off a corner kick from Kim Pachuta.

Julie Miller recorded a save in her only opportunity as the Mountaineers held a 19-2 shot advantage. All 20 active players on the roster saw time in the game.

The surprising Mountaineers won their second straight game to improve to 4-1-1 on the season, the program’s best start in its four year history. They have scored more goals in their first six games of the season (13) then they did in all of 2004 and tied the school record for wins in season.

Lisa Russo recorded eight saves in goal for Juniata (1-4-1) before leaving the game late in the second half.

Mansfield will host Bloomsburg in a key PSAC East game this Saturday.
