FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MOUNTIES STUN BLOOMSBURG IN WOMEN’S SOCCER – FIRST ROAD CONFERENCE WIN IN SCHOOL HISTORY

BLOOMSBURG – Good things come to those who wait and the Mansfield University women’s soccer team ended a four year wait by earning their first road win against a PSAC opponent with a 3-1 victory at Bloomsburg Wednesday afternoon.

“I’m so happy for our seniors, especially Julie (Miller),” said head coach Tim Dempsey. “It’s amazing because we played awful for the first 20-25 minutes before we scored. Then we got the second goal and the tempo of the game and our mind set changed.”

The game did not start out like a milestone moment as the Mountaineers struggled to get any momentum going in a lackadaisical first 25 minutes. But things changed in the 32th minute when sophomore midfielder Kim Pachuta took a centering pass from Amy Dominick and placed it perfectly over the hands of Bloomsburg goalie Brittany Moses and just below the crossbar.

Freshman sensation Lyndi Keiser scored the game’s second goal just over a minute later when she rebounded her own shot off the goalie from 16 yards out, directing it into an empty net from six yards out.

After taking a 2-0 lead into halftime, the Mountaineers would increase their lead to 3-0 less than a minute after intermission when Amy Dominick stole the ball and her 25-yard shot tucked into the left hand side of the net just above the outstretched hands of the Bloomsburg goalie, inches from the crossbar.

Bloomsburg, which held a 21-6 shot advantage in the game, got on the scoreboard in the 51st minutes when Christina Mazurek scored off an assist by Christie Mongelli.

“We just battled and hung on for the final 20 minutes,” said Dempsey. “I have to give a lot of credit to Robyn Travisano, Desiree Boris, Vanessa Wengen and Stephanie Haulman, our back four players. They performed well down the back stretch and preserved the win.”

Julie Miller recorded five saves in goal for the Mountaineers.

Mansfield evened its overall record at 6-6-3 and 2-6-2 in the PSAC East, setting new school records for overall and conference wins in a season. The Mountaineers moved past Millersville into a fifth place tie with Shippensburg in the PSAC East with eight points. They trail fourth place Bloomsburg by one point.

Mansfield, which won its second straight game, hosts Kutztown this Saturday.
