FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: SOCCER IMPROVES TO 2-0 WITH SHUTOUT OVER JUNIATA

HUNTINGDON – Freshman Colleen Corcoran (Allentown/Central Catholic) scored two goals and junior Julie Miller (Watkins Glen, NY) pitched a shutout in goal to lead Mansfield University to a 4-0 win over Juniata College Wednesday afternoon.

“We did so good things out there today, both offensively and defensively,” said head coach Tim Dempsey. “Our freshman continued to play well and we put a lot of offensive pressure on them for the entire game.”

Anita Valerio was credited with the game’s first goal at the 19:52 mark before Corcoran scored her first unassisted goal 37:38 into the first half. Mansfield took a 3-0 lead just under three minutes before the half when junior Megan Colbey scored on a penalty kick.

Corcoran scored the game’s final goal with just over eight minutes left to play.

Julie Miller played the whole game at goal where she stopped three shots to gain the shutout.

The Mountaineers held a 16-5 advantage in shots on goal and 5-1 in corner kicks.

Mansfield improves to 2-0, marking the best start in the program’s three year history. The Mountaineers are unscored upon this season after beating Daemen College 2-0 in the season opener. It was also the largest margin of victory in team history.

The team travels to IUP for their first PSAC game of the season this Saturday.
