RELEASE DATE: 2/28/04 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MANSFIELD WOMEN’S PLAYOFF HOPES VANISH IN SEASON ENDNG 89-58 LOSS AT WEST CHESTER – TEAM SETS NEW SCHOOL RECORD FOR WINS WEST CHESTER – The Mansfield University women’s basketball team saw their last chance to earn a PSAC Playoff berth fade away in a 85-58 loss to PSAC East Champion West Chester Saturday afternoon at Hollinger Fieldhouse. The Mountaineers, who would have earned the programs’ first ever PSAC Playoff berth with a win, trailed 8-6 after the first five minutes of play before West Chester went on a 27-12 run over the next ten minutes. Senior Rachel Rieder (Cranberry TWP/Seneca Valley) was the Mountaineers one bright spot in the first half, scoring MU’s first eight points and hitting all seven of her first half shots to score 14 of her game high 22 points by intermission. Mansfield to rally from a 43-24 halftime deficit to pull to 47-36 on a layup by Rieder just under four minutes into the second half. But Mansfield would be able to pull no closer in ending the season with a 14-16 overall record and 5-7 in the PSAC East. The Mountaineers would actually finish tied for fourth place in the PSAC East with a 5-7 record, but Kutztown – which split the series with Mansfield – held the tie breaker with two wins over third place Bloomsburg. Rieder wrapped up her career with one of the best overall games of her career. In addition to her 22 points, Rieder pulled down eight rebounds with four blocked shots. Senior Jessica Pfeiffer (Erie/Seneca) also went out strong with 11 points as did sophomore Alison Tagliaferri (Linden/Jersey Shore). Kiesha Mack led West Chester (16-11, 11-1) with 22 points while Carolyn Muldoon had a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds. Pfeiffer ended her career as the Mountaineers ninth all-time scorer (1,011), seventh in 3-point field goals (86) and 10th in steals (147). Although just at Mansfield the past two seasons, Rachel Rieder scored 492 points with 399 rebounds over that span. Her 89 career blocked shots ranks third in school history. Although just a sophomore, Tagliaferri is 11th in school history in scoring (929). Her 440 points this season are the second highest season total in school history. Although it ended on a disappointing note, the 2003-2004 season was a record breaker for the Mountaineers. Mansfield set a new school record for wins in a season (14) while posting a best ever fourth in the PSAC East. The five conference wins ties the school record. Also playing their final games for Mansfield were seniors Nadia Gauronsky and Julia Krajnik.
