FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MOUNTAINEER WOMEN FALL SHORT IN QUEST FOR PLAYOFF BERTH
– WEST CHESTER RALLIES FOR 73-63 WIN
MANSFIELD
– Allyson Buss (Nazareth/Notre Dame) ended her outstanding
collegiate career with a game high 23 points, but it would not be enough as West
Chester ended Mansfield’s playoff hopes with a 73-63 win in women’s PSAC
East basketball action at Decker Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.
“It
was a great effort that just fell short,” head coach Ruth Henderson
said. “We knew we had to contain them inside and we did a great job of that,
but they hit from outside in the second half and in the end that was the
difference in the game.”
Mansfield,
which need to beat West Chester to earn the program’s first ever PSAC playoff
appearance, started out blazing with a 16-7 run over the first six minutes of
the game. The Mountaineers would increase their lead to 30-16 on a Buss
3-pointer with seven minutes left in the first half before settling for a 35-25
advantage at intermission.
But
West Chester would come roaring back via the 3-point route with a 20-10 run over
the first six minutes of the second half to tie the game at 45-45. Mansfield
edged back ahead leading 54-49 on a jumper by Danna Purnell (Deer Park,NY/Deer
Park) with 9:03 to play only to have West Chester take a 64-59 advantage
with 3:44 to go.
Mansfield pulled to within 64-61 when Buss stole the ball
and scored with 2:06 to play. But a 3-pointer with 1:35 to go by Kiesha Mack and
five made free throws over 20 seconds gave West Chester the game. West Chester
was 11-18 (61.1%) on 3-point attempts, including 8-12 in the second half.
Buss
was one of four Mountaineers in double figures with 23 points. Lynelle
Mosley (Media/Penncrest) had 11 points and seven assists with Rachel
Rieder (Cranberry Twp./Seneca Valley) also scoring 11 points and pulling
down a game high nine rebounds. Danna Purnell added 10 points.
Kiesha
Mack scored 20 points to lead West Chester, which captured the PSAC East crown
(21-6, 11-1).
Besides
ending one of the most successful seasons in Mountaineer history, the game also
marked the final for seniors Allyson Buss and Lynelle Mosley who were honored in
pregame ceremonies. Buss ends her career as the third leading in school history
with
1,174
points while Mosley is the seventh all-time scorer with 1,110 points.
“Points
and statistics don’t begin to describe the contributions Allyson and Lynelle
have made to this program,” explained Henderson. “They are leaders who have
sacrificed throughout their careers to make us a better program and they have
achieved that goal. We are a much better program for having Allyson Buss and
Lynelle Mosley play here.”
Mansfield’s
11-15 record is the second most wins in school history and the 5-7 PSAC mark
ties the school record for conference wins in a season.

1,000 points, but it would not be enough as the Mountaineers dropped a 68-59
decision to Kutztown in the opening game of the PSAC East season at Keystone
Hall Wednesday night.
“It’s
hard to explain just how much Allyson Buss has meant to this team and this
program,” said head coach Ruth Henderson. “I’m sure Allyson
would give up all 1,000 points to get a win tonight. It’s disappointing that
we couldn’t win for her on this milestone night.”
Buss

Buss scored nine of her game
high 20 points in the first half and went over the 1,000 point mark on a

intermission.
The
Mountaineers closed the gap to 60-55 on a 3-pointer by Jamie Painting (Rochester,NY/Greece-Olympia)
with 4:27 to play in the game, but Kutztown hit six free throws to pull out the
win.
Mansfield outshot Kutztown from the field, but the Golden Bears drained 27 of 30 free throw attempts to improve to 7-8 overall and 1-0 in the PSAC East.
Stephanie
Rieser (Barnegat,NJ/Southern Regional)
scored 15 points for the Mountaineers with Lynelle Mosley (Media/Penncrest)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MANSFIELD PICKED TO FINISH FIFTH
IN PSAC IN PRESEASON POLL – ALISON TAGLIAFERRI NAMED PRESEASON ALL-PSAC EAST
-- MOUNTIE WOMEN OPEN 2002-2003 CAMPAIGN AT WEST VIRGINIA/RED ROOF CLASSIC THIS
WEEKEND
MANSFIELD – After missing their first ever PSAC playoff berth by a total of five points, the Mansfield University women’s basketball team was picked to finish fifth in the PSAC East this season in the coaches preseason poll. The poll was released this afternoon as part of the PSAC Media Videoconference.
“Being
picked fifth gives us something to prove,” fourth-year head coach Ruth
Henderson said. “We are an improved team from last season, both in
attitude and skill level. We believe we can be a playoff team and I believe we
have the players to achieve that.”
Alison
Tagliaferri, the PSAC East Rookie of the Year and first team All-PSAC
East selection, was one of six players picked as preseason All-PSAC honors by
the head coaches. As a freshman last season, Tagliaferri led the PSAC East in
scoring averaging 14.6 points per game along with 7.0 rebounds.
Sidelined with an injury for much of the preseason,
Tagliaferri has just returned to practice. Her status for the weekend has yet to
be decided.
The Mansfield University women’s basketball team will open the 2002-2003 season when they travel to West Virginia this weekend to face West Virginia State and West Virginia Tech in the Red Roof Classic.
The Mountaineers will face West Virginia State at 7:30 p.m.
on Friday, before traveling to West Virginia State for a 5:30 game on Saturday.
“We’re excited to get the season started,” said Henderson. “This is a pretty competitive tournament and a good way to see where we are at.”
After finishing with the second most wins in school history
during the 2001-2002 campaign, the Mansfield University Mountaineer women’s
basketball team has been counting the minutes to the start of the 2002-2003
season.
Last year, Ruth Henderson’s Mountaineers were the
most improved program in the PSAC and the eighth most improved in all of NCAA
Division II.
Most would consider it a challenge to improve on last
season’s accomplishments but coach Henderson expects to exceed those
milestones.
She has good reason for those high expectations. Returning
the top five scorers from last year along with four other players who saw action
in 19 of more games, the Mountaineers will have more experience on the court
than in anytime in recent memory.
That experience, along with a strong incoming class, could
result in the Mountaineers first ever post-season appearance.
Leading the group will be last year’s PSAC East and ECAC
South Rookie of the Year and first team All-PSAC East selection Alison
Tagliaferri (Linden/Jersey Shore). The leading scorer in the PSAC East
last season as just a freshman, Tagliaferri earned PSAC East Player or Rookie of
the Week honors five times, while averaging 14.6 points and 7.0 rebounds per
game.
Also returning to the starting rotation is senior guard
co-captain Lynelle Mosley (Media/Penncrest). A four-year starter,
Mosley was a second team All-PSAC East selection last season where she averaged
10.3 points per game and was second in the conference in steals (85). Mosley
will be joined at guard by four-year starter and co-captain Allyson Buss
(Nazareth/Notre Dame). The leading scorer on the team in each of her
first three seasons, Buss is coming back as a graduate student after missing the
final 11 games of the season last year with an injury. She averaged 13.8 points
and ranked among the PSAC’s most accurate free throw and three-point shooter
before her injury. Buss is just 137 points from becoming the Mountaineers
seventh 1,000-point scorer.
Sophomore Stephanie Rieser (Barnegat,NJ/Southern
Regional) and junior Jessica Pfeiffer (Erie/Seneca)
combined for 29 starts in the backcourt last year where Rieser averaged 8.6
points per game and Pfeiffer 8.1 points per outing. Together they combined for
48 three-pointers. Also returning at guard is junior Nadia Gauransky
(Summit Hill/Panther Valley) was appeared in 21 games in 2001-2002 with
five starts.
Junior Nicole Katsoff (Lebanon,NJ/North Hunterdon)
will vie for a starting spot at forward after appearing in every game last
season, including 10 starts. She will be joined in the frontcourt by sophomore Tara
Stock (Martinsburg/Central) who appeared in 19 games as a freshman.
Maura Gibbons (Center Rockaway,NJ/Morris Catholic)
is the team’s tallest player and appeared in 22 games as a freshman last
season including three starts.
