MANSFIELD: The Mountaineer women fell short in a 46-42 loss to LeMoyne College Saturday in the final game of the Mansfield University Comfort Inn Classic.

Meredith Hafer opened up the game with a jumper off a pass from Tegan Atallah. Mansfield continued to build their lead to an 11-point difference as they were ahead of LeMoyne 15-4 with about nine minutes of play left in the first half.

Mansfield went into halftime with a lead of 20-18. Going into the second half, the highest lead Mansfield saw was an eight-point deficit with a score of 34-26 off a good three pointer from Mallory Hafer and sister Meredith’s assist.

With almost two and a half minutes left of play, LeMoyne tied the game with a free throw from Siobhan Shields who used her second free throw to take the lead 41-40. LeMoyne scored another five points while Mansfield was only able to score two to end the game.

Mansfield’s top scorers were Mallory Hafer with 12 points, Mallory Moore with 10 points and 10 rebounds and Nicole Pender with 10 points. Moore was 4-4 from the free throw line and also had three steals.

LeMoyne’s top scorers were Brandy Wangelin and Muffy Sadler with eight points.

Mansfield’s Moore, Slippery Rock’s Nikki Presto, Lake Erie’s Jen Caiola and LeMoyne’s Meg Murphy were named to the Comfort Inn Classic’s Classic Team. The MVP of the tournament was Lake Erie’s Stephanie Rogers and the Hustle Award went to Mansfield’s Pender.

The Mountaineers return to action January 2 when they host Edinboro University at 1 p.m.
