MANSFIELD – Clarissa Correll (Mansfield/Mansfield) scored 18 points and Alicia Espigh (McVeytown/Lewistown) added 17 points to lift Mansfield to a 68-65 win over Goldey-Beacom in a non-conference basketball game at Decker Gymnasium Monday night.

It was a hot and cold night for the Mountaineers who connected on 13 of their first 16 shots to run out to a 32-9 lead after the first 11 minutes of the game. But the roles would revise over the final nine minutes of the half with Mansfield scoring just two points over that span as Goldey-Beacom pulled to 34-28 at intermission.

Goldey-Beacom closed the gap to 37-36 four minutes into the second half before Correll nailed two 3-pointers to give Mansfield a 47-40 advantage at the 13:48 mark.

Mansfield extended the lead back to double figures with a 67-57 lead on a 3-pointer by Espigh with 3:39 left ,but Goldey-Beacom wouldn’t go away closing to 67-65 on a layup by Jacinda Jones with 21 seconds remaining in the game.

Correll hit a free throw and Goldey-Beacom final shot before the buzzer was off the mark.

Mansfield hit six 3-pointers in the second half and shot 51.9% from the floor in the game.

Sophomore Merissa Gaeta (Kirkwood,NY/Windsor) scored 11 points and added six rebounds in her first start of the season for the Mountaineers. Correll, who scored 12 of her 18 points in the second half, dished out eight assists. Espigh also pulled down six rebounds.

Jacinda Jones scored a game-high 21 points for Goldey-Beacom (3-7) with Toni Jones recording a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds.

Mansfield will travel to Edinboro and Slippery Rock this weekend before opening the PSAC East season at Kutztown on Jan. 16.
