Box Score

Philippi, WV – Alicia Espigh scored 13 points to lead a solid team effort as the Mansfield University women’s basketball team opened the 2006-07 season with a 64-53 win over Alderson-Broaddus at Rex Pyles Arena in Phillip, West Virginia Saturday afternoon.

“Certainly a good way to start at season,” said Ruth Hermansen entering her eighth season at the helm. “It really was a team effort the entire game with a lot of different people stepping up at key times. Hopefully that’s the way it’s going to be all season.”

Emily Akins jumper at the 11:25 mark of the first half snapped a 10-10 tie and sparked an 11-0 run over the next three minutes capped off by a jumper by twin sister Katie Atkins. In a trend that would last the game, five different players scored during the 11-0 run.

Alderson-Broaddus rallied with a 10-2 run over the first five minutes of the second half to tie the score at 28-28 before Emily Akins hit a jumper and ensuing free throw to put Mansfield up for good.

Espigh recorded 10 of her team high 13 points in the second half with Jeanette Meacham scoring 12 points and Jess Uhrich 10. Emily Atkins and Clarissa Correll each added nine points. Sophomore point guard Courtney Brooks dished out five assists with five steals and a team best six rebounds.

Stephanie Phatiphong scored a game high 18 points of the bench for Alderson-Broaddus (0-1).
