RELEASE DATE: 12/14/06 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mountie Women Overcome First Half Struggles to Improve to 5-1 MANSFIELD – Jessica Uhrich led four Mountaineer women in double figures with 22 points as Mansfield overcame a cold shooting first half to earn a 76-71 victory over Post University on Thursday night at Decker Gymnasium. The 5-1 start is the best start for the Mountaineers since the 1990-91 season when Mansfield began the season 5-0 before losing their next two games. The Mountaineers missed their first eight shots of the game as Post built a 12-0 lead with just under 14:00 to go before Courtney Brooks put Mansfield on the board with a jumper at the 13:41 mark. The cold shooting Mounties trailed 12 points with just over 3:00 to play in the half when Jess Uhrich converted on a free-throw to start a 9-0 run to end the half trailing 30-27. The Mountaineers shot 28.1% from the field in the first half while Post was 48.1 %. Mansfield committed 12 turnovers in the half. Post would open the second half with another run rebuilding their lead to eight points at 37-29 with 17:44 to play. Mansfield closed the lead to within three before Post went on another run to take an 11 point lead with 12:42 to play before Uhrich's foul shots ignited another Mountie run. Mansfield went on an 8-0 run to close the lead to 49-46 with 9:44 to play. Mallory Hafer gave the Mountaineers the lead for the first time with 6:16 to play on one of her five 3-point baskets as Mansfield went on a 16-3 run to open an 11 point lead at 67-56 with 3:23 to play. Mansfield would hang on for a 76-71 victory. Uhrich led the Mountaineers with 22 points and nine rebounds. She also had three assists and three steals. Mallory Hafer added 19 points including five 3-pointers and five rebounds. Courtney Brooks had a season high 10 points and Emily Akins also had 10 points for the Mountaineers. Marjorie Prado led the Eagles with 14 points while Telisha Moultrie added 11 and Kenetta Kelly added 10. Mansfield finished 40.3% from the field after shooting 51.4% in the second half while Post finished at 50.0% from the field. Mansfield held the slight rebounding advantage at 41-39. Post committed 26 turnovers in the contest while Mansfield turned the ball over 21 times. The Mountaineers improve to 5-1 on the season while Post falls to 1-6. Mansfield is back in action when they travel to Mercyhurst Saturday for a 3 p.m. tip-off.
