FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mountie Women Drop Houghton 76-47 in Home Opener

MANSFIELD -- The Mansfield University women's basketball program improved to 2-0 on the season after taking their home opener over Houghton College by a score of 76-47 Tuesday  night at Decker Gymnasium in Mansfield.

Things started slowly for the Mountaineers as Houghton opened the game with a 7-0 run. The Mounties would fight back to take the lead 8-7 on a layup by Jessica Uhrich at the 15:08 mark. The lead would change hands numerous times throughout the first half before Jeanette Meacham sparked an 11-2 run to end the half with Mansfield leading 32-23.

Mansfield continued their scoring run to start the second half, totaling a 21-0 run to increase the lead to 48-23 with just over fifteen minutes to play. The Mountaineers led by as much as 32 points in the second half before taking the victory 76-47.

Mansfield was led by three players in double figures with Mallory Hafer leading the charge with 15 points. Hafer was 6-of-13 from the floor and hit three 3-pointers. Alicia Espigh added 14 points while Jessica Uhrich chipped in 12. Brittany Reed added nine points while Merissa Gaeta had eight. 12 Mountaineer women contributed to the scoring effort on the evening. Emily Akins led the Mountaineer women in rebounds, pulling in nine boards while Uhrich had seven.

Mansfield shot 42.3% from the floor for the contest and 34.8% from the 3-point line. Houghton was 30.2% from the field and 12.5% from the arc.

Leah French led Houghton in scoring with 12 points while Erika Forland and Becky Kallal added eight and seven points respectively.

The Mountaineers improve to 2-0 on the young season and are back in action again on Saturday, November 25th when they take on Messiah at home. That contest is scheduled to begin at 2:00 at Decker Gymnasium.

Houghton falls to 0-3 on the season.
