FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mounties Fall Cold In OT -- Drop Fifth Straight

Box Score

OAKDALE, NY – Courtney Brooks led the Mountaineers with a career best 21 points but Mansfield was held scoreless for the first 4:45 of overtime as Dowling College defeated the Mounties 62-58 in a thriller on Wednesday evening.

A 3-pointer from Courtney Brooks started the Mountaineers off on the right foot igniting a 6-0 run out of the blocks as Mansfield went on to take an 11 point lead early in the first half.

Mansfield led by five or higher for the duration of the first half and held an eight point advantage at halftime with the score at 31-23.

Dowling opened the second half with a 13-6 run cutting the Mountie lead to just two points to bring the score to 37-35 with 12:23 remaining in regulation.

Mansfield responded with a 9-0 run sparked by a Courtney Brooks steal and a Jeanette Meacham lay-up to put the Mounties back on top by 11 at 46-35 with just under 10 minutes to play.

Dowling chipped away at the lead and took advantage of missed shots and Mountaineer turnovers to take their only lead of the game at 49-48 with 4:22 to play.  Meacham and Brooks put Mansfield back on top with two lay-up's at 53-51 with 2:09 to play.

Things fell apart for the Mountaineers in the final two minutes of regulation when they were held scoreless as Denice Frohman drained the game-tying shot for Dowling with zero seconds remaining on the clock.

Overtime would follow the same recipe as the final two minutes of regulation as the Mountaineers were shutout for nearly the entire overtime scoring their first points with just 15 seconds remaining. Dowling ran up an eight point lead at 61-53 with 38 seconds to play.

Brooks hit a 3-pointer for the Mountaineers with 15 seconds to play and hit another jumper with six seconds remaining but it would not be enough as Dowling hung on for a four point victory at 62-58.

Mansfield hit just two of seven shots in the overtime period.

Brooks led the Mountaineers with her second straight career best scoring 21 points on 8-of-12 from the field including five 3-pointers. She also recorded five rebounds, five assists, and eight steals, one steal away from tying the Mountie school record for steals in a game.

Jessica Uhrich added a double-double performance of 11 points and 10 rebounds while Mallory Hafer also added 11 points. Kelli Eastman played a career high 32 minutes and added nine points.

Teelah Grimes led Dowling with 21 points and 10 rebounds while Kristina Mitchell added 15 points.

With the Mountaineers fifth straight loss they drop below .500 for the first time this season at 5-6 overall.

Mansfield will try to steer things back on course when they travel to California (PA) on Saturday for a PSAC crossover game at 1:00pm before returning home for four straight contests.

Mansfield will host four straight games within a span of one week starting next Wednesday, January 10th when the Mountaineers open the PSAC East conference schedule against Millersville. That game is scheduled to tip-off at 5:30 pm.
