Jessica Ulrich scores 19 at Mansfield University cruises to win over UDC

MANSFIELD -- Jessica Ulrich scored 19 points and pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds as Mansfield University cruised past the University of the District of Columbia 76-64 Sunday in the Mansfield University Women’s Basketball Classic.

Also hitting double figures for the Mountaineers were Alicia Espigh, who had a career-high 19 points, including four three-pointers, and Alison Tagliaferri, who had 18 points. She now needs 15 points to break the school record of 1,378, set by Paula Olesky (1983-1986).

The Mountaineers only trailed the Firebirds at the 2-0 mark. Mansfield went on a 9-0 run early in the first half, sparked by Espigh’s second trey at the 14:35 mark of the second quarter.

Espigh and Ulrich had hit double figures by the end of the first half with 13 and 10 respectively, as the Mountaineers took a 38-27 lead into the locker room.

Mansfield opened its lead even further as they hit the first six points of the second half and never looked back. UDC was held scoreless in the first 2:45 of the half. The Mountaineers would go up as much as 17 points three times in the second half.

UDC was led in scoring by Deidra Bumbrey, who had 13 points.

Following the game, Espigh was named tournament MVP. Ulrich and Tagliaferri were named to the all-tournament team.

In the first game of the afternoon, Columbia Union College edged Cheyney 68-67.

With the win, the Mansfield University women opened the 2005-2006 season with a 2-0 record. Next up for the Mountaineers is a trip to Houghton College on Tuesday.
