Slow Start Dooms Mountie Women in 80-68 loss at Millersville
MILLERSVILLE – Alison Tagliaferri recorded 17 points to extend her career school scoring record, but the first Mansfield University women’s basketball team to make the PSAC playoffs ended their season on a heartbreaking note, falling to Millersville 80-68 Tuesday at Pucillo Gymnasium. Tagliaferri, who played her final college game Tuesday, now holds the school record for points with 1,795 in her career. She tied the mark set by Tommy Harvey (1990-1993) in the last regular season game against Cheyney last Saturday, also by scoring her season average of 17 points. The Mountaineers came out flat early against Millersville and committed six turnovers in the first four minutes. The Marauders, meanwhile, were on fire throughout the game. They shot 65.5 percent in the first half, only missing ten shots in the period and only three from inside the three-point arc. Millersville cooled off only slightly in the second half, hitting 45 percent in the closing period. Millersville jumped out to the early 22-4 before the Mountaineers could get anything going. At that point, Mansfield’s leading scorer, Becky Ayers sparked her team’s offense as she recorded a lay-up and followed that up with three treys in the span of a minute to narrow Millersville’s lead to 24-12. Ayers ended her final game with a team-leading 18 points. “They just weren’t missing and we weren’t shooting well,” an emotional Tagliaferri commented after the game. “We dug ourselves a hole we couldn’t get out of. It was like déjà vu from the last time we played here.” That was not entirely accurate. The Mountaineers shot 44.7 percent from the field in their first ever playoff game, a marked improvement from their 30.2 percent shooting performance in a 67-48 loss Feb. 8. However, Millersville connected on 57.1 percent of their shots Tuesday. The Mountaineers tried to claw their way back into the game using the three-point shot. Mansfield was able to record 24 of their points from three-point range, including 15 in the first half. Unfortunately for the Mountaineers, Millersville had an answer for even that. Millersville’s Danielle Marshall was five for ten from beyond the arc and finished with a game-high 21 points. “We took away Marshall’s drive,” Mansfield head coach Ruth Hermansen said. “But she hurt us with three pointers.” The story was no different in the second half. The Mountaineers came out of the locker room down 44-30. The Marauders would extend their lead to as much as 20 in the second half and had an answer for every Mansfield play. The final score was the closest Mansfield would come to narrowing the gap. In addition to the efforts of Tagliaferri and Ayers, Alicia Espigh hit double figures with 12 points. Defensively Jessica Uhrich and Ayers were credited with four steals each while Tiffany Taylor had three. Marshall led the way for Millersville with her 21 points. Jamika Rehm had 17 points and was a perfect seven for seven from the floor and three for three from the charity stripe. With the win, Millersville advances to the conference semifinals at California (Pa.) on Friday. While Mansfield seniors Tagliaferri, Ayers, Taylor, and Breanne Day may have played in their last game at Mansfield, the entire team will be remembered as the first women’s team to make the playoffs. In each of the previous four years, the team has missed the playoffs by just one game. “I don’t think they will realize what they have accomplished until years down the road,” Hermansen said.
