Jessica Uhrich hits rebound milestone, but Mountaineer rally falls short 57-51

EAST STROUDSBURG – Junior Jessica Uhrich became the seventh player in Mansfield University history to grab more than 500 rebounds in her career, but the Mountaineers could not rebound from a 15 point deficit as they lost to East Stroudsburg 57-51 at Koehler Field House Wednesday.

Both Uhrich and senior Alison Tagliaferri posted double-doubles in the game. Uhrich finished with 12 points and 20 rebounds and Tagliaferri scored 14 points and snagged ten rebounds. Tagliaferri was also the leading scorer for the game.

The Mountaineers’ shooting woes continued, though, as Mansfield players only hit 29.5 percent of their shots. That represents the second worst shooting performance of the season for the Mountaineers and the fourth straight game they failed to surpass their season average.

Mansfield kept the score close early and led by as much as three twice in the first half. Tiffany Taylor hit a jumper at the 6:33 mark to give her team the three point lead, 14-11. A layup by Tagliaferri at the 5:19 mark of the first half gave the Mountaineers what would become their final lead of the night with the score 16-15.

The Warriors responded by going on a 14-2 run to close out the first half and take a 29-18 halftime lead.

Defense and missed shots were themes throughout the opening frame as the Warriors hit only one shot and Mansfield missed all of theirs between the 15:37 and 9:28 marks of the half.

East Stroudsburg continued their domination over the Mountaineers through the first part of the second half, taking the 15 point lead on a three pointer by Maryellen Onofre at the 9:31 mark.

At that point, the Mountaineers started their rally as freshman Clarissa Correll responded with a three-pointer of her own a minute later. Uhrich followed that up with a steal and layup to narrow the Warriors’ lead to ten.

Unfortunately for the Mountaineers, they could not completely narrow the gap down the stretch, getting only as close as four on two free throws by Tagliaferri with 27 seconds left in the game.

With the loss, Mansfield falls to 7-13 overall and 2-3 in the PSAC East. East Stroudsburg improves to 9-10 overall and 3-2 in the conference. Mansfield is in action again on Saturday when they host Cheyney at Decker Gymnasium.
