Alison Tagliaferri hits third double-double of season in loss to The Rock

Slippery Rock – Alison Tagliaferri scored the 19th double-double of her career but the Mountaineers came up short in a 63-55 loss to Slippery Rock Sunday.

Slippery Rock jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, but the Mountaineers kept the game close in the first half and were down by only three at half time 23-20.

In the second half, Slippery Rock used a strong defense to force turnovers and converted them into points. They opened up the second half with a 19-7 run and extended their lead to as much as 17 points at the 11:04 mark.

The Mountaineers staged their own comeback, primarily with the inside play of Tagliaferri and Jessica Ulrich, who combined for 34 of Mansfield’s 55 points. Mansfield narrowed Slippery Rock’s lead to eight with 1:23 left in the game on a free throw by Courtney Brooks.

But the effort was not enough as the Rock matched Mansfield’s scoring down the stretch, with each team scoring five in the final minute.

Tagliaferri led all scorers with 20 points. She also pulled down 15 rebounds, to give her three double-doubles in six games this season. Ulrich added 14 points of her own.

With the loss, the Mountaineers fall to 4-2 on the season. They travel to Mercyhurst on Friday.
