FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Espigh records five three pointers in 83-75 loss to IUP

MANSFIELD – Junior Jessica Uhrich recorded a double-double and sophomore Alicia Espigh buried five three pointers, but the Mountaineers could not overcome Indiana University of Pennsylvania as Mansfield dropped a PSAC cross-over match 83-75 on Saturday.

The Indians jumped out to an early 6-0 lead on the strength of two three-pointers by Kara Taylor. The Mountaineers quickly narrowed the lead to one on a three pointer by Becky Ayers and a two pointer by Alison Tagliaferri. IUP responded with six points of their own, and never looked back.

Mansfield was able to narrow IUP’s lead to as little as three on Tagliaferri’s field goal and free throw at the 6:36 mark of the first half. Later, IUP would go up by as much as 15 points, taking a 60-45 lead early in the second half and the Mountaineers could not narrow the gap.

A key difference in the game was free-throw shooting. IUP hit 15 of their 21 free throws while the Mountaineers were only 8 of 24 from the charity stripe.

Tagliaferri was the game’s top scorer, recording 18 points and hitting seven of nine from the floor. She also had nine rebounds. Uhrich contributed 12 points and pulled down 15 rebounds. All 15 of Espigh’s points came off of three point shots.

Mansfield falls to 5-6 on the season with the loss while IUP improves to 9-3. Next up for the Mountaineers is a home game against Lock Haven on Sunday afternoon.
