FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Uhrich scores 16 points in loss to Clarion

CLARION – Mansfield fell behind Clarion early and could not rally for the win as the Mountaineers dropped the PSAC cross-over match 63-53.

Mountaineer junior Jessica Uhrich recorded 16 points to lead the team. Senior Alison Tagliaferri had a rare off day, recording only seven points and five rebounds.

Uhrich gave the Mountaineers their first and only lead of the game as she hit two free throws just 12 seconds into the match. Clarion tied up the game at two 22 seconds later on a layup by April Gratton. The Golden Eagles would not look back from that point.

Uhrich rounded out Mansfield’s scoring in the first half with a layup with three minutes to go in the period. Clarion then scored eight unanswered points to take the 33-16 lead at half time. Mansfield’s 16 points was the lowest first half tally all season.

The Mountaineers scored the opening points again in the second half as Alicia Espigh hit a three point jumper to narrow Clarion’s lead to 14. The Golden Eagles did not get shaken and went up as much as 26 when Clarion’s Chelsey Grabigel scored on a driving layup at the 12:33 mark.

Mansfield did end the game on a strong note, shutting out Clarion in the final 5:19, but the 14-0 run was not enough to overcome the 24 point lead.

The Mountaineers were hurt by poor shooting, hitting only 35 percent from the floor and seven of 12 from the free throw line. Clarion shot 44.6 percent from the floor and 80 percent from the charity stripe.

The Mountaineers fall to 5-9 on the season. They will open their PSAC East schedule when they host Millersville Wednesday at Decker Gymnasium.
