RELEASE DATE: 11/4/05 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MANSFIELD SWIMMERS WIN THREE EVENTS, BUT FALL TO LOCK HAVEN Lock Haven -- Mansfield University swimmers garnered three first place finishes, including two by Abbe Tipton, at Lock Haven Saturday, but fell to the Eagles 119-82. The Mountaineers’ Tipton took first place finishes in the 200 yard individual medley and 100 yard backstroke. Mansfield also grabbed first and second places in the 100 yard butterfly on strong showings from Maureen Maikner and Andrea Popovic. In the day’s first event, the 400 yard medley relay, the team of Tipton, Melissa Recchiuti, Maikner, and Popovic took second place as they finished in 4:33.47. Lock Haven’s team of Gerda Smirnova, Diane Sujansky, Isabel Carneiro, and Kelly Grieneisen took first place with a time of 4:15.67. Lock Haven also had the third place team. Mansfield’s Mary Tucker took third place in the day’s second event, the 1650 yard freestyle, in a time of 20:21.93. Katie Grieneisen took first with a time of 19:34.24. Popovic took second place in the third event, the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:08.88, seven seconds ahead of Lock Haven’s Kristen Caburis. Lock Haven’s Carneiro finished first, posting a conference qualifying time of 2:01.66. Mansfield’s Samantha Kutskel finished fifth and picked up a meet point for the event. In the fourth event, the 50 yard freestyle, Mansfield swimmers took second, third, and fourth places, but Lock Haven got another conference qualifying time and took first place. Mountaineers Daniella Borrelli (27.24), Mindy Smith (27.61), and Diana Daniel (28.29) placed second, third and fourth respectively. Lock Haven’s Sujansky placed first with a time of 25.24. Tipton’s first win came in the day’s fifth event, the 200 yard individual medley, in a time of 2:25.75. She was six seconds faster than the Eagle’s Shannon Samanka. Mountaineers Hannah Lampshere and Recchiuti took fourth and fifth respectively. Mansfield posted a solid showing in the next event, the 100 yard butterfly. Maikner took the event with a time of 1:05.70. Teammate Popovic took second place with a time of 1:07.27, about half a second faster than Caburis. Mansfield recorded a third place finish from Borrelli in the seventh event, the 100 yard freestyle in a time of 59.68. Mountaineers Smith and Recchiuti finished fifth and sixth respectively. Lock Haven’s Smirnova won the event with a time of 56.74. Tipton recorded her second win in the eighth event, the 100 yard backstroke, with a time of 1:05.60. Her time was four seconds faster than the Eagles’ Becca Rhodes. Mansfield’s Daniel (1:10.88) and Lampshere (1:19.63) recorded third and fifth place finishes. In the ninth event, the 500 yard freestyle, Mansfield got a second place finish from Tucker (5:52.71) and a third place finish from Kristin Van Duzer (6:12.68). Kutskel was fifth with a time of 6:34.88. Lock Haven’s Katie Grieneisen was first with a time of 5:46.36. Mansfield recorded second and third place finishes in the 10th event, the 100 yard breaststroke. Recchiuti posted a time of 1:21.72 while Van Duzer finished in 1:25.40. Lock Haven’s Kerri Grey took first with a time of 1:16.97. In the day’s final event, the 200 yard freestyle relay, Mansfield had a second place finish by the team of Maikner, Smith, Daniel, and Borrelli. They recorded a time of 1:50.23. Lock Haven’s team of Kelly Grieneisen, Carneiro, Smirnova, and Sujanksy finished seven seconds faster. Lock Haven also had the third place team. With the loss, the Mountaineer swimmers fall to 1-4. Next Saturday, the Mountaineers travel to Edinboro to take on the Fighting Scots and Kutztown in a tri-meet.
