FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mansfield University swimmers down King’s College 109-41 on Senior Day

MANSFIELD -- Six different Mansfield University swimmers grabbed first place finishes in individual events and Mountaineer teams won both of their relay events in a 109-41 victory over King’s College on Saturday.

Saturday was also Senior Day and Mountaineer senior swimmers Andrea Popovic, Diana Daniel, and Melissa Recchiuti each turned in impressive times. Popovic won the 50 yard freestyle and was on both winning relay teams. Daniel took the 100 yard backstroke and was on one of the winning relay teams. Recchiuti posted a second place finish in the mixed 200 yard individual medley.

Another Mansfield highlight was Stephanie Klegarth’s time of 1:10.55 as she swam exhibition in the 100 yard breast stroke. That time is two seconds faster than her school record time set last season.

In addition to the eight women’s events, King’s College men swam five events and the Mountaineers and Monarchs had three mixed events.

The Lady Monarchs did not participate in the first event, the 200 yard medley relay. The Mountaineer team of Abbe Tipton, Klegarth, Daniella Borrelli, and Popovic took first place with a time of 1:57.70. Daniel, Recchiuti, Maureen Maikner, and Kristine Van Duzer took second with a time of 2:07.18.

Mansfield swimmers were the only participants in the second event as well. Freshman Mary Tucker took first place in the 1000 yard freestyle, with a time of 12:17.08. Charity Learn took second with a time of 13:23.58.

Mountaineer freshmen placed first and second places in the third event, the 200 yard freestyle. Tricia Learn took first place with a time of 2:03.08 while her teammate Hannah Lamphere took second with a time of 2:18.74. King’s College’s Amanda Liotine took third place in the Monarch’s first event.

In between two men’s events, Popovic had her second win of the day in the fifth event, the 50 yard freestyle, in a time of 26.85. Borrelli’s time of 27.46 earned her a second place finish.

Recchiuti placed second in the seventh event, the mixed 200 yard individual medley, with a time of 2:35.95. First place went to the Monarch’s Scott Klabunde. Also placing for Mansfield were Van Duzer in third and Samantha Kutskel in fifth.

Maikner took event eight, the 100 yard butterfly, in a time of 1:05.47. Charity Learn took fifth, with a time of 1:22.60.

Borrelli took first place in event nine, the 100 yard freestyle, in a time of 59.65. Van Duzer finished third out of four swimmers in a time of 1:04.40.

In between two more men’s events, Daniel placed first in event 11, the 100 yard backstroke, with a time of 1:14.11. Lampshire took second in a time of 1:19.52 and Kutskel took fourth with a time of 1:25.51.

Mansfield swam exhibition in the next two events, the 500 yard freestyle and the mixed 100 yard breaststroke. Tricia Learn posted the best time, 5:41.96, in the freestyle event. In the breaststroke event, Klegarth, Maikner, and Recchiuti posted times that would have been good enough for second, third, and fourth places respectively out of six swimmers. Klegarth’s time in the event was 1:10.55, two second better than her school record time of 1:12.51 set on Feb. 5.

The Mountaineers then took first and second places in the final women’s event, the 200 yard freestyle relay. The team of Klegarth, Tricia Learn, Daniel, and Popovic took first place with a time of 1:51.62. Tipton, Lampshere, Tucker, and Charity Learn were second with a time of 1:54.58. The King’s College team of Carly DeGrezia, Kira Terbecki, Regina Schmerfeld, and Liotine finished third in a time of 2:09.04.
