RELEASE DATE: 10/29/05 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MANSFIELD UNIVERSITY SWIMMERS TAKE THREE EVENTS IN LOSS TO BLOOMSBURG The Mansfield University Mountaineer swim team had three strong finishes late in their Saturday morning home meet against Bloomsburg, but came up short 163-77. In the morning’s tenth event, the 200 yard breaststroke, Stephanie Klegarth posted the winning time of 2:42.87. Her teammate Melissa Recchiuti was second with a time of 3:01.83. Mountaineer swimmers also swept the next event, the 500 yard freestyle, as Mary Tucker, Kristine Van Duzer, and Samantha Kutskel recorded times of 5:50.31, 6:17.56, and 6:33.61 respectively. In the day’s 12th event, Maureen Maiker recorded a time of 1:07.03 to take the 100 yard butterfly. The Mountaineers started strong with a second place finish in the 200 yard medley relay. The team of Abbe Tipton, Klegarth, Maikner, and Andrea Popovic finished in 2:02.31, three seconds behind the Bloomsburg team of Ashley Koch, Allie Reed, Lauren Sterkenberg, and Kristen Ohlsen. The Mountaineers got fourth and fifth place finishes in the 1,000 yard freestyle as Tucker finished with a time of 12:06.20 and Van Duzer finished in 13:02.32. The Huskies’ Barb Caccia won the event in 11:26.69. Popovic grabbed a third place finish in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:11.34. Also for Mansfield, Hannah Lampshere took fifth place with a time of 2:24.00. Bloomsburg’s Sarah Hippeli won the event with a time of 2:04.96 and her teammate Jackie Gribbin took second. In the morning’s fourth event, the 100 yard backstroke, Tipton recorded a second place finish with a time of 1:05.12. Bloomsburg’s Laura Jeffers took first with a time of 1:03.58. Mansfield also got a fifth place finish from Diana Daniel, who had a time of 1:10.92. Klegarth took third place in the next event, the 100 yard breaststroke. Her time of 1:13.94 was less than a tenth of a second behind Bloomsburg’s Reed. Bloomsburg’s Erin Carey won the event with a time of 1:12.19. Recchiuti and Kutskel had the fifth and sixth place finishes. Mansfield did not have a swimmer in the 200 yard butterfly event and Bloomsburg secured first, second, and third places. The Mountaineers took third, fourth, and fifth places in the 50 yard freestyle. Daniella Borrelli finished third with a time of 27.55. She was followed by teammates Mindy Smith, who had a time of 27.98, and Daniel, who recorded a time of 28.54. Bloomsburg’s Courtney Dean had a time of 26.48 to win the event. The Mountaineers could only muster fourth, fifth, and sixth place finishes in the eighth event, the 100 yard freestyle. Popovic finished fourth with a time of 1:00.11. She was followed by teammates Borrelli (1:03.17) and Smith (1:04.60). The Huskies’ Dianna Smith was first as she posted a time of 56.48. Tipton placed third in the ninth event, the 200 yard backstroke, with a time of 2:25.05. She was two seconds behind Bloomsburg’s Koch. The Huskies’ Kari Pokrzywa easily won with a time of 2:13.84. The Mountaineers also had a fifth place finish by Lampshere, who posted a time of 2:50.29. Tipton turned in another third place finish in the day’s 13th event, the 200 yard individual medley. She recorded a time of 2:29.34. Recchiuti finished fifth with a time of 2:49.00. Bloomsburg’s Erin Carey won the event with a time of 2:18.06. Mansfield had another third place finish in the morning’s final event, the 400 yard freestyle relay. The team of Borrelli, Smith, Tucker, and Popovic posted a time of 4:07.55. The Mountaineer team of Van Duzer, Daniel, Kutskel, and Lampshere finished fifth with a time of 4:33.67. Bloomsburg’s team of Dean, Gribbin, Ashley Yelinek, and Smith placed first with a time of 3:46.36. The Mountaineers next travel to Lock Haven for a meet next Saturday, Nov. 5.
