FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mansfield Fails to Capitalize on Red Zone  Chances in 20-0 Setback to Cornell

MANSFIELD – DJ Schiavetta ran for 115-yards including touchdown runs of 20 and 22-yards to lead Cornell to a 20-0 win over Mansfield in a Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) contest Saturday afternoon on a damp Karl Van Norman Field.

“We need to be more consistent,” said a disappointed head coach Dan Davis. “Cornell is a fine football team but we certainly didn’t play up to our potential or take advantage of opportunities that were given to us.”

With rain starting to fall late in the first quarter, Cornell took advantage of good field position when Schiavetta capped-off a 32-yard four-play drive with a 20-yard run with three minutes remaining in the first quarter. Daren Phillips PAT was good for a 7-0 Cornell lead.

On the next possession, Mansfield drove to the Cornell 24-yard line before giving the ball up on downs as the first quarter ended. Mansfield pinned Cornell deep in its own territory forcing a punt from their- own four yard line.

Mansfield’s Lucas Bailey returned the punt 39 yards giving the Mountaineers a first-and-goal from the eight-yard but four incomplete passes kept Mansfield from scoring.

Cornell’s second touchdown was setup on a Mansfield fumbled punt giving Cornell a first-and 10 at the MU 12-yard line. Two plays later Schiavetta scored from 11-yards out and the PAT was good giving Cornell a 14-0 lead at halftime.

Cornell used an 8-play, 63-yard drive to score the game’s final touchdown capped off by a 20-yard TD run by quarterback Elliot Corey. The PAT failed.

Mansfield had trouble sustaining drives against the blitzing Cornell defense, managing to convert on just one of 14 third-down conversions. The Mountaineers managed 61-yards in total offense to Cornell’s 353-yards. Mansfield also turned the ball over five times.

Cornell rushed for 324 yards on 68 attempts with Elliot also breaking the 100 yard-mark with 11-yards. He completed 2-of-11 passing attempts for 19 yards.

Mansfield freshman quarterback Kode Plank completed 2-of-11 passes for 20 yards in wet conditions before giving way to fellow freshman Robert Kresge in the second half. Kresge completed 4-21- for 33-yards. Senior Matt Gant had three receptions for 23-yards while sophomore Tyler Floyd ran for 16-yards on three carries.

Freshmen Zachary Sauers led the Mansfield defense with a game-high 13 tackles two of them for a loss. He also forced a fumble, knocked down a pass and recorded a sack. Fellow freshman Aaron Blinn had 10 tackles including two for a loss. Adam Breon was credited with six-tackles and an interception.

Mansfield falls to 1-1 on the season and travels to legendary Franklin Field this Friday night to take on the University of Pennsylvania Quakers at 7.p.m.
