FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MOUNTAINEER SOFTBALL TEAM RAISES $350 FOR TIOGA COUNTY CHAPTER OF
AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY IN FERRIS LUTES STRIKEOUT CANCER DAY
MANSFIELD -- The Mansfield University softball team raised $350 for the Tioga County
Chapter of the American Cancer Society by hosting Ferris Lutes Strikeout Cancer Day in its
doubleheader with Millersville University Saturday.
More than 100 fans made a $3 donation during the games and were automatically entered into
drawings for Mountaineer apparel.
The fund raising event was named in honor former Mountaineer standout Ferris Lutes. A
member of the MU Athletic Hall of Fame, Lutes was an outstanding basketball and baseball
player for the Mountaineers in the 1930's and died of colon cancer in 1998.
He was the husband of Helen Lutes -- for whom the MU softball complex is named. Helen --
also a member of the MU Hall of Fame who at age 92 still attends most of the MU softball
games -- and Ferris have been generous supporters of Mountaineer athletics and its
scholar-athletes for many years.
Helen Lutes threw out the first pitch -- a perfect strike -- in pregame ceremonies.
