SELECTED TO CHALLENGE GREEK OLYMPIC SOFTBALL TEAM

’s Alison Tagliaferri (Linden/Jersey
Shore) will get a small taste of the Olympics after being one of several
Pennsylvania players selected to challenge the Greek Olympic Softball team in a
double header,
6:30 p.m.
tonight at Hess Field in
State College
.
Tagliaferri
was selected along with 18 players who will team up with Coach Kelly Green of
Lock Haven University to play the Greek Olympic team, whom are known as the ‘
Hellas
’ in a double header.
This will be the second stop for the Greek team on their ‘Road to
Athens
’ tour, similar to Team
USA
’s ‘Aiming for
Athens
’ tour.
With the announcement of
Greece
being the host site for the
2004 games,
Greece
exercised the option to take
one of the eight spots on the roster of softball teams competing in the games.
Since softball has been non-existent in
Greece
prior to 1999, the
International Softball Federation (ISF) aided
Greece
in putting together a
competitive team for the 2004 games.
They selected Linda Wells, head coach of
Arizona
State
to coach the Greek team, who
has been with
Arizona
State
for the past 13 years and has
compiled over 450 victories while with the Sun Devils.
The Greek team consists of players that are both American and Greek citizens.
To be eligible to play on the team, the players needed to have a
grandparent with Greek descent.
This marks the second tournament Tagliaferri has taken part in this summer.
In June 15-20, Tagliaferri was part of the USA Athletes International
Team that took part in the 11th annual Holland Invitational
Tournament. The team finished 5-2 and advanced to the championship game before
falling short to
Russia
, 1-0.
In 2004, Tagliaferri was ranked amongst the PSAC elite.
She finished third in the PSAC in batting with a .429 average. Her 45
hits included seven doubles, three triples and eight home runs. She also drove
in 33 runs. Tagliaferri ranked first in the conference in slugging percentage
(.781%) and third in on-base percentage (.479). She was also third in the PSAC
in home runs (8).
Tagliaferri also ranked seventh in the conference in ERA (1.29) while posting an
8-4 record. In 98.0 innings worked, she struck out 90 batters.
She
earned her third straight All-PSAC East honors being named to the All-PSAC
East 1st team for the first time.
Tagliaferri
helped lead the Mountaineers to a Championship 2004 season, as the Mounties
captured the 2004 ECAC Championship after defeating
Georgian Court
