FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: TAGLIAFERRI SELECTED TO CHALLENGE GREEK OLYMPIC SOFTBALL TEAM

Mansfield- Mansfield University ’s Alison Tagliaferri (Linden/Jersey Shore) will get a small taste of the Olympics after being one of several Pennsylvania players selected to challenge the Greek Olympic Softball team in a double header, 6:30 p.m. tonight at Hess Field in State College .

Tagliaferri was selected along with 18 players who will team up with Coach Kelly Green of Lock Haven University to play the Greek Olympic team, whom are known as the ‘ Hellas ’ in a double header.

This will be the second stop for the Greek team on their ‘Road to Athens ’ tour, similar to Team USA ’s ‘Aiming for Athens ’ tour.

With the announcement of Greece being the host site for the 2004 games, Greece exercised the option to take one of the eight spots on the roster of softball teams competing in the games.

Since softball has been non-existent in Greece prior to 1999, the International Softball Federation (ISF) aided Greece in putting together a competitive team for the 2004 games.

They selected Linda Wells, head coach of Arizona State to coach the Greek team, who has been with Arizona State for the past 13 years and has compiled over 450 victories while with the Sun Devils.

The Greek team consists of players that are both American and Greek citizens.  To be eligible to play on the team, the players needed to have a grandparent with Greek descent.

This marks the second tournament Tagliaferri has taken part in this summer.  In June 15-20, Tagliaferri was part of the USA Athletes International Team that took part in the 11th annual Holland Invitational Tournament. The team finished 5-2 and advanced to the championship game before falling short to Russia , 1-0.

In 2004, Tagliaferri was ranked amongst the PSAC elite.  She finished third in the PSAC in batting with a .429 average. Her 45 hits included seven doubles, three triples and eight home runs. She also drove in 33 runs. Tagliaferri ranked first in the conference in slugging percentage (.781%) and third in on-base percentage (.479). She was also third in the PSAC in home runs (8).

Tagliaferri also ranked seventh in the conference in ERA (1.29) while posting an 8-4 record. In 98.0 innings worked, she struck out 90 batters.

She earned her third straight All-PSAC East honors being named to the All-PSAC East 1st team for the first time.

Tagliaferri helped lead the Mountaineers to a Championship 2004 season, as the Mounties captured the 2004 ECAC Championship after defeating Georgian Court 10-2
