SWEEP EAST STROUDSBURG IN SOFTBALL RALLY IN BOTTOM OF FINAL INNING IN BOTH
GAMES
MANSFIELD Kay Canfield (Columbia Crossroads/Troy)
singled in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning in the opener and Jaclyn
Laskowski (Olyphant/Mid Valley) doubled in the winning run in the bottom
of the seventh in the nightcap as Mansfield University swept East Stroudsburg
8-7, 6-5 in PSAC East softball at Helen Lutes Field Saturday afternoon.
East Stroudsburg tied the score at 6-6
with a single run in the top of the seventh inning and took a 7-6 lead with
another solo run in the top of the eighth.
Kristy Loomis (Carbondale/Bishop OHara)
led off the bottom of the eighth with pinch
hit single for the Mountaineers. Loomis advanced to second on a sac bunt by
Jaclyn Laskowski and moved to third on a single by Jes Ricker. Loomis scored the
tying run on a suicide squeeze by Heather Long (Pottsgrove/Pottstown).
Kriss Kelly was walked to load the bases before Canfield singled in the winning
run.
Alison Tagliaferri (Linden/Jersey Shore)
started on the mound for Mansfield, scattering six hits and striking out six
before giving way to Heather Bensinger (Tamaqua/Tamaqua) who
allowed three hits over the final 2.1 innings to pick up her first win of the
season. Freshman Kriss Kelly (Nineveh,NY/Afton) had two hits,
including her fourth home run of the season. Hensinger and Laskowski also had
two hits apiece.
In the nightcap, both teams battled back and forth before the
Mountaineers won the game in the bottom of the seventh.
Kriss Kelly and Alison Tagliaferri gave Mansfield a 2-0 lead
with RBI singles in the first inning. After East Stroudsburg tied the score with
two runs in the top of the third, the Mountaineers came right back with two runs
of their own in the bottom of the inning when led off with a double and scored
on a two run home run by Laskowski.
East Stroudsburg scored one in the top of the fourth, before Jes
Ricker (Shillington/Governor Mifflin) led off the bottom of the fifth
for the Mountaineers with a solo home run.
East Stroudsburg would tie the game at
5-5 with a run in the top of the seventh inning before the Mountaineers rallied
to scoring the winning run in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Bensinger
singled and Kriss Kelly reached on an error. One out later, Laskowski doubled in
Bensinger for the game winning run.
Freshman Kristen Dean (Roaring Branch/Canton)
started and went the first six innings for Mansfield, scattering seven hits and
striking out one. Liz Lyon (Harpursville,NY/Windsor) picked up her
third win of the season. Bensinger went 3-3 with a double while Laskowski was
2-3 with a double, home run and three RBI.
Mansfield improves to 10-8 overall and 3-5 in the PSAC East.
The Mountaineers travel to Millersville on Sunday before returning home to host
Millersville on Monday.
